Apex Legends Season 16, “Revelry”, starts on February 14th. If this season has a theme, it’s that the developers at Respawn Entertainment are taking a look at the four-year iteration of their hugely popular battle royale and rethinking the big picture concepts, rather than introducing shiny new things for already experienced players to collect and play.
That makes it a very different season than fans are used to. Season 16 patch notes have already been published; Here we round them up on their highlights and why they’re being added to the game, with comments from Respawn developers.
Who is the new character for season 16?
For the first time, Respawn Entertainment begins a new season without an accompanying new Legend for players to meet. Instead, the designers overhauled the game’s class system, giving each role a unique perk.
The characters and their new quests are:
- Attack: Ash, Fuse, Mad Maggie, Bangalore and Revenant
- Skirmishers: Pathfinder, Horizon, Octane, Valkyrie, Wraith, Mirage
- Enlightenment: Bloodhound, Crypto, Seer, Vantage
- Controller: Caustic, Wattson, Rampart, Catalyst
- Support: Lifeline, Loba, Newcastle, Gibraltar
Respawn has given seven characters a major rebalance. Unsurprisingly, two of them are Recon characters – Bloodhound and Seer – in an attempt to get to grips with an “infamous scan meta” that has been the source of some in-game controversy since Seer’s launch in August 2021.
Is there a new map for Apex Legends in season 16?
Also no, although the game got a new, huge battle royale map, Broken Moon, in season 15, and Respawn doesn’t usually deliver a new map (battle royale or arena) every season. Instead, Respawn dedicated itself to implementing a new Team Deathmatch game mode, a feature long-requested by the Apex Legends community.
Team Deathmatch on apex is a battle between two teams of six in which the player chooses their legend and gear at the start of the game, with respawns occurring automatically after elimination, similar to team deathmatches in many other popular shooters. First team to 30 kills wins the round and winning two rounds wins the match.
“That’s pretty much it, pretty vanilla TDM, pretty basic,” Martin Wong, on apex game designer said in a media preview two weeks ago. “The on-launch maps will be Party Crasher, Habitat, and Skull Town,” Wong added, implying that Skull Town will return (according to lore it was destroyed) after leaving the game in Season 14.
Team Deathmatch will be a limited time mode for the first three weeks of Season 14.
What happens after the three-week run of Team Deathmatch?
Players will receive a new playlist called Mixtape starting March 7th. Mixtape will be a rotation of limited time modes that fans have enjoyed in the past. “Mixtape will be a permanent place for players to play Control,” Wong said, referring to a very popular LTM that debuted in Season 12 and was last available in mid-January.
“We definitely want mixtape to evolve to always have new stuff for people to enjoy,” Wong added. “We don’t have any hard and fast rules about what goes into mixtape right now. So you will definitely see new modes there. We might bring back old modes to the mixtape to keep things fresh. We’ll see what happens from season to season.”
What’s included in the Apex Legends Season 16 Battle Pass?
All players will receive a Wraith Skin, 7 Apex Packs, 11 Weapon Skins, 4 Loading Screens, Trackers for all Legends, 2 Music Packs, 200 Apex Coins and a Season Badge through the free tack of the Revelry Battle Pass.
Apex Legends Players who pay for the Premium Battle Pass will receive cosmetic rewards for Crypto, Valkyrie, Bloodhound, Mirage, and Rampart. You can see them in Apex Legends Season 16 Battle Pass video above and in the gallery below.
Is there at least one new weapon?
Yes! Apex Legends hasn’t gotten a brand new weapon since November 2021 when Season 11 shipped the CAR SMG titan fall 2. For Season 16, players will receive the Nemesis Energy Assault Rifle.
“This is a four-shot burst assault rifle with an automatic trigger,” said designer Eric Canavese, “which means it fires those salvoes as quickly as possible when you hold the trigger.” It also shortens the delay between Bursts the longer the trigger is held. This faster burst mechanic is actually a charge that briefly lasts in the weapon even when not fired, meaning players can reload mid-bursts while maintaining their increased speed.
Canavese said the goal of Nemesis is “a really fluid burst-fire weapon experience. […] You can reposition some battle positions, make some battle decisions and still have a fully powered up Nemesis to lay down fire, downrange.
There is also a new attachment – a legendary shotgun bolt, which is an upgrade of the existing attachment for the EVA-8, Peacekeeper and Mozambique shotguns. This also increases the rate of fire of these shotguns. The gold perk for this attachment automatically reloads a shotgun when the player slides, regardless of whether the shotgun is equipped or not.
What is Respawn doing to bring new players to Apex Legends after four years?
Respawn’s developers seem to be aware of the fact that their battle royale has evolved into a very competitive space that can ban new players interested in setting foot in a new world. To that end, they’ve made changes to the game’s shooting range practice mode and introduced AI bots in “orientation matches” for completely new players before they can embark on a full battle royale.
The changes to the shooting range include 10 new challenges that will introduce players to some of them Apex Legends‘ Basic moves – from basic skills to changing shields and breaking down doors. Completing these challenges will award an Apex 101 Emblem to the player’s collection.
The AI bots will be opponents in the orienteering games. “That will help take the pressure off, let’s [new players] getting your bearings, understanding what a DropShip is, how the ring works, things like that,” said designer Aaron Rutledge.
New players can also invite experienced friends to these games, Rutledge said. The field isn’t strictly user vs. bots, he added. There will be 16 teams of bots that will never be a new player’s teammates; They will be matched with other new players (or players they invited) on 16 other teams. Orienteering matches take place on the main King’s Canyon map.
“As soon as the new players come in first place or finish in the top five a couple of times, or even get enough reps in the orienteering games, they’re discarded and thrown into the regular population,” Rutledge said.
What are the Apex Legends season 16 start and end dates?
Apex Legends Season 16, “Revelry,” goes live February 14 at 10am PST/1pm EST. An end date has not been announced (probably because that would herald the start date of season 17 ahead of time), but the February season of Apex Legends usually ends in early May.
