The former Apex Legends and Titanfall developer has left to join a new studio: Wildlight Entertainment. According to the official website, the developers have been “quietly working on the new IP for some time.”
The Meet the Team page showcases a large number of employees with impressive resumes, the vast majority of whom have worked on Apex Legends and/or Titanfall games.
CEO Dusty Welch was the CEO and GM of Apex Legends, but he also had a storied career, launching and launching the Call of Duty franchise at Activision and serving as publishing director for Guitar Hero. There’s also Chad Grenier, Wildlight’s new studio head who previously worked on Apex, the Titanfall game, and the beloved original Call of Duty Modern Warfare game.
This trend continues! You have Mohammad Alavi, former creative director on Respawn’s now-canceled single-player adventure and senior developer on the Apex, Titanfall, and Call of Duty franchises. You could go on and on – this is a star-studded team.
This might remind some of you of Respawn’s founding, when Jason West and V ince Zampella left Infinity Ward along with many of their colleagues. Admittedly, this was in more dramatic circumstances, with the duo accused of corporate espionage (courtesy Polygon). It does, however, bring with it an exciting new IP, Titanfall, which some argue has the best FPS action we’ve seen in Titanfall 2 in years.
So who can predict what the future will hold. With EA canceling numerous Respawn projects, including the aforementioned single-player Titanfall game, there may be hope for another game that reaches the same heights in the near future. We’ll have to wait for an update from Wildlight Entertainment, but it’s safe to say the bar is high.
