It’s been almost a year since Square Enix was released Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Editiona “remastered” version of the 1999 classic on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Switch, as good as the original game was, was also a very bad port.

Here among others are some of the complaints we had last April when we first played the game on an OLED switch:

  • Elaborate pre-rendered backgrounds now appear blurry and smeared
  • 3D character models, rendered in higher resolution, stick out like a thumb in the new environments
  • Combat often stutters and becomes unresponsive
  • There are no saved states (but there is auto save in the overworld)
  • There is no way to swap graphic styles on the fly
  • FMVs weren’t always upscaled cleanly
  • The HD fonts are clear but look out of place

Do you understand what I mean? Bad port! The game and the fans deserve better. And better is what they’ll get, as Square Enix promises an update later this month that will try to fix some of the version’s issues. How many of them will fix them and how well they will fix them is unclear, but addressing them is at least a start.
