Blumhouse Productions has a solid reputation among horror fans and has produced a string of horror films in recent years. The production company, behind such titles as Paranormal Activity, Get Out, and M3GAN, has announced it is entering the gaming industry.
Blumhouse’s new division will be called Blumhouse Games, and it “will partner with independent game developers to bring their creative visions to life through original horror-themed games.” What’s more, Blumhouse-produced games will have low independent budgets. $10 million, “to innovate and push the boundaries of creativity.”
“Horror and genre games present a unique opportunity in the indie space, and I’m excited to partner with Blumhouse to meaningfully leverage the company’s brand, reputation, and creative talent,” Blumhouse Games president Zach Wood said in a release. Zach Wood will also join Don Sechler, who has been named Chief Financial Officer of Blumhouse’s new venture.
Abhijay Prakash, president of Blumhouse, also stated, “With their experience, sensitivity and knowledge of the gaming market, Zach and Don are the ideal leaders to bring Blumhouse’s unique genre strengths to life.”
Blumhouse Games hasn’t detailed any of its upcoming projects yet, and given Blumhouse Productions’ slate of films, it’s anyone’s guess what to expect. Maybe there will be a video game spinoff of The Purge or Insidious, or better yet, maybe we’ll get to know some new original horror games.
While my hopes are not high, as I expect ghost or doll-related games to return to popularity (both of which are actually quite scary), I’m looking forward to whether Blumhouse Games will delve into the goofy side of horror, as it often does in the movies it makes. what do you think?
