Satellite communication will be the most popular innovation in 2023 among smartphone manufacturers. The next Android 14 will be compatible with this technology as standard, but there are already several brands that are taking the lead.

The great advantage of satellites is that they are able to cover any point on the planet; we are not limited to the presence of cell towers as is the case with 4G and 5G. Of course, it has other limitations, especially regarding the amount of data that can be transmitted, but it is enough to send and receive messages.
Connect to satellites with your mobile
Many mobiles that will be launched throughout the year will be compatible with the satellite connection; and there are already some, like the iPhone 14 Pro and the Huawei Mate 50 Pro, that are able to make these connections, but only in certain markets. This should change in the coming months as manufacturers adopt this standard.
If you don’t want to wait, or want to buy a new mobile, Motorola’s new announcement interests you. The brand has just announced the Motorola Defy Satellite Link, a small device that adds a satellite connection to our mobile.
Although it may seem nothing special at first glance, inside this resistant case is the new MediaTek chip with support for satellite connection, as well as a Bluetooth connection with which to connect our mobile wireless.
Once we have paired the two devices, we can use the Bullit Satellite Messenger application, which is able to send and receive messages through the Defy Satellite Link. However, it must be taken into account that the person receiving these messages can only read them with the same application installed on the mobile; If you don’t have it, you will receive an SMS that will give you instructions on how to install it. This is necessary due to the small amount of data that can be transmitted over this connection; and it also means that we cannot make calls or use applications that require mobile internet with this connection.
Although its usefulness is limited, for many people it will be a safety jacket, literally speaking. It can be an ideal accessory for adventure or for people who often have to travel to areas without cell phone coverage.
The Motorola Defy Satellite Link will be available from the second quarter of the year, priced at $99; to this we must add the $4.99 per month that it will cost to have the satellite connection, although the device is sold with 12 months of this service for $149. At the moment there is no price for Europe.
