The biggest highlight of Sony’s first State of Play live broadcast this year is of course the in-depth discussion The Expendables: Kill the Justice League. As promised, we got quite a bit of gameplay, as well as a broader explanation from the developer on how it works.
While it’s from the makers of the Batman Arkham series, Suicide Squad looks nothing like the studio’s past work.
Rocksteady revealed that Suicide Squad is primarily a co-op shooter, and while there are certain traditional fighting elements in it, this looks more like a Destiny adaptation. The game can be played solo, but it’s clearly meant to be played with friends.
When you don’t have anyone to play with, the bots replace all remaining characters – so you always have four of them, and you can even switch between them. This structure also brings with it a host of other expected additions, such as loot, gear sets, and gear scores that determine your overall strength.
There are cosmetic outfits too, but thankfully they’re separate from functional gear, so you can at least look the way you want without affecting how you play. Speaking of looks, Suicide Squad does have a b attle pass that includes cosmetics, which is another thing, which isn’t too surprising, especially given the recent leaks.
Suicide Squad’s gameplay looks to combine fluid traversal of the metropolis with acrobatic combat. Each of the four villains has unique movement abilities and plays different roles in battle. For example, King Shark is the team’s tank, and Harley Quinn is the fastest and most agile on the team.
Just like in Destiny, weapons can be upgraded and customized, and they can come from different manufacturers, adding some variety to the loot you find.
Upon launch, Rocksteady said you can expect new playable characters, new quests, new weapons, and a variety of content to play with once you’ve completed the main story.
Rocksteady promises more announcements between now and the game’s May 26 launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
