In your favorite game you come across “FOV” in the settings and you don’t know what that means? We explain what is behind the expression.
That means FOV: Field of View
The abbreviation “FOV” stands for the English expression “Field of View”. Translated into German it is the “field of vision”, i.e. the visible area of the eyes. We humans have a field of vision of around 180 degrees. Boundaries are created by the eyelid and the eye socket. Compared to the kestrels with 300 degree vision, this doesn’t necessarily seem farsighted.
What is FOV used for?
Aside from the obvious usage for the general field of vision that each of us has, the term FOV also has meaning in a gaming context. In first-person shooters, it’s important to know the limits of the player’s viewable area. But it is also advantageous for game tactics to keep an eye on the FOV of the NPCs and MOBs.

What does “yeet” mean?
Classically, the FOV in FPS is around 90 degrees, but it can often be adjusted a bit. The FOV is also important for photographers. Depending on which object is to be in focus, the angle of view of the camera must be set.
This is how you use FOV
The abbreviation FOV is theoretically just the English equivalent of “field of view” and “angle of view”, so you can use them interchangeably. However, in normal usage you will only find a few people talking about “dead FOV”. You will primarily find use for the abbreviation in the gaming context, where things have to be done quickly, or as a knowing camera artist.
The technical FOV is not to be confused with the more narrative POV.
