It turns out that Yuan in Overwatch 2 It doesn’t really matter that much after all, since players prefer to play their favorite characters rather than who is the best.
In almost all competitive games, no matter how much you like a particular character, they may not actually be the best in terms of said competitive aspects. As a competitive shooter, Overwatch 2 clearly falls into this category, but in game director Aaron Keller’s new blog post about the game, you might be surprised to learn that players aren’t just based on the hero with the most kills to select hero rates (thanks PC Gamer).
One of the big things that players have observed confirmed in the blog is that, as far as supporting characters go, Brigitte is basically one of the best characters in the game right now. “Brigitte has been really hot this season, with the highest win rate in almost every skill tier except the top 500, where Zen leads the way, both averaging close to 55% win rate,” says writer Keller. “On the other hand, Kiriko and Moira are around 45 percent.”
Interestingly, the fact that Brigitte is such a powerful character doesn’t seem to influence the player’s choice of character. “When we look at who’s playing, the top supports are Ana, Cerico, and Mercy,” Keller went on to explain, noting that this applies to all skill tiers, “until Silver and Bronze, where Moira is picked heavily.”
Keller himself noted that it was “counterintuitive” that Kiriko had a high pick rate among top players but a low win rate overall.
At the end of the day, though, players are usually drawn to characters they like and, quite simply, their personalities. Picking a character out of anything can be intimidating, so people usually pick whoever looks the coolest and then change based on how they feel later. Unless you’re actually in a tournament, it’s mostly a sign that you can play as much as you want, and that’s a good lesson to learn.
