Spacer’s Choice Edition for PS5, out March 7

We at Obsidian are thrilled to announce an updated version of The Outer Worlds for PlayStation 5 – The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition. Let’s dive into some of the exciting changes we’re making to this Council Approved RPG and how we approached it.

The Outer Worlds has been incredibly well received by fans around the world and has won numerous awards, so having the opportunity to improve on something we know people love has been a real treat.

If you’re not too familiar with the game, here’s a quick summary:

Lost in transit while on a colonizer ship bound for the outer reaches of the galaxy, you awake decades later than expected to find yourself in the midst of a deep plot threatening to destroy the colony. Explore the various planets and locations of Halcyon, including the mysterious asteroid Gorgon and the delicious distillery of Eridanos. As you encounter various factions, all vying for power, the decisions you make determine how the story unfolds.

The new generation of consoles came out just a year after the game’s original release, so it made sense for us to refresh the base game, bundle the available content, take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s latest hardware capabilities and feedback trigger of the DualSense controller to ensure that it would endure and remain relevant for many years to come. Hence, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition.

Here’s how the teams did it.

Beyond visual enhancements

Of course, improving the visuals is part of the deal. We were able to update 4K, 60FPS graphics, improve volumetric lighting, improve particle systems, and improve environments with increased asset density. We’ve also raised the bar in several additional ways: we’ve made the combat and companion AIs smarter, improved the open-world feel through better depth of field and by reworking existing views, updated weather conditions variables and we have reworked character models and animations. Don’t worry, we haven’t dared to touch the heart of what made The Outer Worlds great. There’s no point in reinventing the wheel, but new tires are always a plus.

That being said, the DualSense wireless controller’s adaptive and haptic triggers are an entirely new and exciting feature set. When using ranged weapons, players will enjoy different trigger effects depending on the type. For a weapon like the flamethrower, the player will feel linear pressure. When firing an automatic weapon, trigger bounce will generate a pulse-like effect for each shot fired. And for single shot weapons like a sniper or shotgun, the trigger pull effect will mimic the feeling of pulling a trigger until the pin fires and the resistance decreases . Pretty cool, right? The game will not only look better, it will also look sharper.

Value a legacy

If the improvements we’ve already outlined weren’t enough to warrant this new edition, we thought this Spacer’s Choice Edition would make even more sense if it included the base game DLCs: Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos. That’s exactly what we did. Now the experience is even richer! By the way: we know that several spacers appreciated that it was an accessible experience, not too short but not too long either. Rest assured, the two DLCs do not extend the main storyline. They exist on the side, providing a new story arc to enjoy if and when you feel like it once you hit the appropriate level. Oh, and we’ve increased the level cap to 99, to give players even more ways to build their character from the seven branches of the skill tree.

If you already own The Outer Worlds base game and its associated DLC, Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos, for PlayStation 4, you can upgrade to The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition on PlayStation 5 at a discounted price.*

The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition will be released on March 7.
