Ampere Analysis has been dealing with the video game market for the past year. Specifically around the console segment and the evolution compared to 2021.

In 2022, the global console games market shrank by 7.8%, mainly due to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X supply difficulties, delayed game releases and a shift in consumer focus. Microsoft’s share of the console gaming market fell from 25.5% to 27.3% due to spending on Xbox console hardware and console Game Pass services. An increase that brings the company to Nintendo’s level!

It also notes that Microsoft’s dual product strategy with Xbox Series X and S for its devices has allowed the company to maximize some of its supply chain challenges and marginally increase its share of unit sales over the year. In addition, Ampere estimates the number of consoles sold for the green giant, a total of 18.5 million units. In contrast, the Sony console has reached the level of 30 million consoles. Spending on console subscription services, meanwhile, rose 5.6% to $7.8 billion. Microsoft has thus increased its market share in the console subscription segment, by signing up a record number of Xbox Game Pass subscribers in the last three months of the year. However, the weakest sector for monetization was games and downloadable content, which fell nearly 15% across all platforms. According to the company, the availability of the Xbox Series X should become more regular in the second half of 2023.
