It turns out that Infinity Ward is using weapon amulets from Modern Warfare to reference the iconic moments in the Modern Warfare 2 campaign.
A recent Eurogamer article pointed out Hawkeye's Redditor, called AnalVor (this Reddit handle). AnalVor discovered the following while playing Modern Warfare:
Very smart IW, really modern warfare
As you can see, each of these three weapon guards is directly related to the memorable moments in Modern Warfare 2. The first armor has a set of jumpers related to the scene where the ghost prepares to torture the bad guy (Skip to 1:44).
The second decoration shows a gas canister related to the scene in which cockroaches and Roach were poured into gasoline, while the third decoration describes the shepherd's use of the last shot to the iconic duo . You can watch these two scenes in the video below, although you probably shouldn't watch them because they make you angry.
As stated in Eurogamer's article, Call of Duty artistic director Joel Emslie acknowledged the discovery through his post.
It's unclear what this might mean, but Emslie's response suggests that the inclusion of Modern Warfare 2 references is a conscious and intentional decision. The question remains: if this is intentional, why? Some fans seem to think this is because Modern Warfare is currently in its second season.
"So it's truer than the rumor," writes the polite Redditor corporalgrif. "These seasons are based on modern war games, so does this mean that the theme of the third quarter is MW3? Does this mean that the fourth season will no longer be the call of the ghost on duty …" (sic)
At the same time, I am in a hopeful ambition, deceiving myself into thinking that this means remaking MW2, relentlessly forbidding myself to acknowledge the cause, and accepting that this is obviously not the case. Regardless, it's worth keeping an eye out for the old Call of Duty game-one step ahead, and you might win yourself some good Reddit karma.
