IGN recently spoke with Konami about the well-received Dead Cells downloadable content, Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania, which is now available on the Nintendo eShop. In particular, they spoke with Konami’s Tsutomu Taniguchi, who worked alongside the team at Motion Twin on the action-packed DLC. Mr. Taniguchi said that the developers at Konami absolutely loved Dead Cells, telling the publication that “Dead Cells is one of the best indie games of the last ten years” and that they were very proud that Motion Twin took inspiration from the classic Castlevania series. He even said that the team was secretly “hoping” that Motion Twin would work with Konami for Castlevania-inspired content, and that he was very pleased with how it turned out.
COO Benjamin Laulan talks about the Dead Cells Castlevania DLC:
“In France we started working on it and well, since Dead Cells ‘respectfully’ stole so many elements from the series, such as: the whip, the key art with the castle, the food hidden in the walls… the rogue-vania’ punchline … (oops!) It made sense to continue down this path, so we got lost in the excitement and went all-in, the proposal quickly turned into a full DLC proposal.”
Back to Castlevania supervisor Tsutomu Taniguchi talking about dead cells:
“Seriously, knowing that Dead Cells, which is one of the biggest indie games of the last ten years, is inspired by Castlevania is a great source of pride for us. When Evil Empire and Motion Twin came back with a proposal for full DLC instead of just this sneak peek, we weren’t surprised and we sincerely hoped so. And we just thought we had to let them go full circle, because we knew they were going to use every bit of their talent to honor the franchise. And also, I personally admit that I really wanted to see what it would be like to fight Dracula in Dead Cells!”
Tsutomu Taniguchi on the future of Castlevania:
“We tried to bring back the games people loved and cherished with the Castlevania Anniversary Collection and Castlevania Advance Collection, we also brought back Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night for our PlayStation and mobile fans, and launched Grimoire of Souls on Apple Arcade to celebrate franchise knowledge. But we know our fans always want more, and so do we, so it was impossible to pass up this opportunity to have this amazing crossover with Dead Cells.”
