The Library of Babel is the new graphic, platforming and stealth adventure title from Tanuki Game Studio. The team is located in Barcelona and is made up of a small group of people who, in my humble opinion, know very well what they are doing. I had the possibility to try a small demo on PC, where I was able to experience the initial premise offered by the title. The final feeling is quite positive, everything is said.

The History of the Library of Babel

The game places us in a completely futuristic tribal Babylon, where robots have taken over everything for many years. It’s been so long that there’s even a group of them who started causing trouble for others, tearing up everyone they meet and adopting an almost bigoted behavior. Our mission is to gather as much information as possible and put an end to the situation.

Admittedly, the decor is not one that we see too much, which is appreciable. The title brings a breath of fresh air to an industry completely saturated with titles that in practice, let’s face it, are the same. The game therefore gets a very positive point for its originality.

The control of The Library of Babel feels very solid, we can jump and grab any ledge, crouch and crawl in addition to running and walking, nothing out of the ordinary. It is true that You can miss other moves by shooting parkour, like running up a wall to reach a higher ledge, etc., although it’s not a game that needs it at all. However, I don’t know the range of motion of the final version, so it could change or expand during the game.

We will also find a multitude of characters with whom to start a conversation. Some will allow us to delve deeper into the stories of the location, learn more about certain individuals, and even start the occasional side mission. They can also give us clues about our goalstherefore conversations are essential.

We have an inventory consisting of several pages, so we have plenty of storage space. We have the possibility to combine objects and use them anywhere, so sometimes it is possible that we have to try x objects in several places before finding the right one.

Sometimes, using an object on a site, even if it’s not yours, may result in an additional dialogwhich again can give us an additional clue or other interesting information.

The map and checkpoints

Apart, We have a map and checkpoints, which will allow us to reappear in case our character is eliminated. They also offer us ability to quickly transport between them at any time, even if we are far from them. It can be a good option to escape certain situations in which we find ourselves stuck or do not know what to do.

Speaking of maps, the environments are full of secrets. Crawling paths, discreet ledges where to climb and find secret area, hidden chests, etc. We must be very aware of our surroundings at all times so as not to miss anything. The demo mentions a “crawler”, which helps us find this stuff.I haven’t been able to test it but it will be interesting to see how it works in the final version.

There are also places through which we will not be able to pass at the beginning, such as doors with cards, which we open when we find them through a minigame. On other occasions, it will be characters who block our path, having to do something before we can access it.

Stealth in The Library of Babelor at least in the demo, it’s simple but intense. We do not fight with enemies, but hide from them through the environment. Whether behind a box, a wall, rubble, everything is allowed. If we get caught, death will be instantaneous and we will respawn at the last checkpoint.

Enemies move in patterns that we have to learn, sometimes that means getting dangerously close to them, you have to be patient. I don’t know if in the final version we can somehow distract themeither by throwing objects or with the environment itself, remains to be seen.

A very nice mechanic of the game is that of the cardboard box. We can use it at any time and move inside it, yes the enemies can’t see us move. It’s something that reminds me Solid metal gearthat although he did not invent the wheel, or in this case, the box, it is inevitable to make the comparison.

The Library of Babel It aims to be a very interesting and fun game. The setting is different from what we are used to, maybe reminds a little Siberia mix with cyberpunk there Wander, which is very positive. The graphics are hand drawn and very pretty. The soundtrack and sounds are very consistent and the playable sensations couldn’t be better. Also, the story, or what little I could prove, is very interesting.

Certainly, it is a game to consider in view of its launch on starting April 7 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4/5, Steam and Epic Games Store.
