We have already spoken several times about the sleep function of the Apple Watch, which since its release in 2018 motivates us to measure the hours of sleep we sleep and seek to adapt to healthier schedules. It has also prompted studies like the Heart & Movement study, which collects data from anonymous volunteers.
And it was precisely this study that launched conclusions that give us a warning: we don’t get enough sleep. And there can be little doubt when the data comes from counting three million hours of sleep using the sensors of the Apple Watch.
Less than a third of people sleep a minimum of hours
Until this type of study, the surveys that were carried out among volunteers were based on their estimated responses, without resorting to sensor data. And that’s why the findings of the Heart & Movement Study matter: because they are much more precise and never lie.
According to the recommendations, an adult over the age of 18 should sleep at least 7 hours. Only 31.2% of respondents do so, while the rest sleep less. If we take an average, it shows that a person sleeps 6 hours and 27 minutes, more than half an hour below what should be the minimum. And even worse, about 29% of people sleep less than 6 hours.
Hence the conclusion: we need to sleep more. You can sleep until nine o’clock if you want, so the margin is generous. Remember: you can set your sleep schedule by using the Sleep app on Apple Watch and wearing it while you sleep.
By the way, a detail: soon there will be another time change so that we can switch from winter time to summer time. We’ll be sleeping an hour less, so keep that in mind when I play later this month.
