According to TLOU director Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us’ upcoming multiplayer spinoff is the game we’ll be “hearing a lot more about” this year.
Speaking about the game in “Spoilers” for the HBO TV adaptation The Last of Us Part 1 (thanks GamesRadar), Druckmann explained that more details about the multiplayer game are coming soon. This derivative work is also Naughty Dog’s “next masterpiece”.
“It was an interesting experience for me because this is the first The Last of Us game where I’m not the main writer, I’m not the main director,” Druckmann said in the spoiler. “It’s so cool what the team put together. It’s very different from what I would do, but it’s part of the excitement, playing with other people in this world.”
As of now, not much is known about the multiplayer game, which started out as The Last of Us Part 2’s multiplayer mode – Factions. During development, however, Druckmann took to the stage at the Summer Game Festival to reveal that Factions will now be a massively standalone multiplayer game in The Last of Us universe.
Druckmann also shared during Summer Games Fest that the multiplayer spinoff has a “new cast of characters” and “takes place in another part of the US.” It’s also “as big as any of our single-player games”.
Ultimately, it seems like there’s a lot to be excited about, but it’ll be a while before we know more concrete details about The Last of Us multiplayer projects. The official anniversary of The Last of Us will happen around June, so hopefully we’ll hear more by then.
