The market for Android portable consoles is so competitive that manufacturers have no choice but to constantly reinvent themselves to attract attention. In Retroid they know it very well, being one of the references thanks to its Retroid Pocket 3 console.

Like many other brands, the Pocket 3 was clearly inspired by the design of the Nintendo Switch, with a central screen surrounded by the controls. Now, this manufacturer presents a new console model that draws its inspiration from the past, and judging by the first reactions, the bet is paying off.
New portable console with Android
The Retroid Pocket Flip stands out for being a console with a clamshell design. In other words, we can close the console to protect the screen when we are not using it and also to reduce the space it takes up and make it more portable.
In this case it is obvious that Retroid was inspired by a classic like the Nintendo DS, although in this case we do not have two screens, and the controls are housed at the bottom, including two analog sticks; the latter is interesting given the reduced space available. All the buttons typical of modern consoles are also included, including analog triggers and top buttons, and there are even two additional buttons that we can program to perform various functions.
In addition to protecting the screen and the controls when we are not using the console, another advantage of this design is that we can put the screen at any angle we want, instead of having to move entire console or playing in an awkward position. The screen measures 4.7 inches and has a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels, with a brightness of 450 nits.
The good news is that this design change does not come with a hardware change. The Retroid Pocket Flip is based on the same processor as the current Retroid model, an eight-core Unisoc T618 (two Cortex-A75 and six Cortex-A55) accompanied by 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and Mali-G52 graphics.
It also means that this console comes with Android as standard, specifically Android 11, so we can install our favorite apps and games; This is also why the screen is touch-sensitive, although with Retroid’s own interface we can access the games using the integrated controls. We also have the option of using the micro HDMI connection to connect the console to a TV, in addition to connecting a controller, keyboard or mouse via USB-C or Bluetooth 5.0. The microSD card reader will allow us to expand the storage for games, beyond the 128 GB included.
While the Retroid Pocket Flip is primarily promoted in the spectacular red color it got (which will be limited to 1,500 units), it will also be available in black and two colors inspired by Nintendo consoles: the Super Nintendo and the GameCube. .
The Retroid Pocket Flip will be available from March 21 on the official website for $159, and shipments will begin on April 10.
