What makes Redfall different from other Arkane games?it all comes down to trust

Arkane, gamesit, Redfall, Trust

One of my favorite “blink-and-miss” moments in gaming comes in Final Fantasy 10, right after you defeat a massive machine on a frozen lake near one of the game’s many temples. Your group hops on a snowmobile—two people per vehicle—and continues its journey to the Makaraniya Temple. In this part of the game, you will follow the main character Tidus, but whoever accompanies him on the sled may vary. It could be more or less any character in the game, who joins you depends entirely on some criteria in the game.

The game calls this “kinship”. If Tidus uses a healing item or healing magic on another actor, the hidden stat goes up. It goes up if he intercepts an attack against them. It goes up if he talks to a character first when they are all scattered in an area. No one ever told you about it, and it didn’t matter at all. But play your cards right, and you’ll see a small interaction with another character help deepen your understanding of them, or provide another piece of information about the background of the world.

You can see a little bit about what I’m talking about here: Character Interaction.

I’m fascinated by this kind of thing in games. Alex once called himself the “Legend of Legends” of the Elden Ring, and that quote stuck with me. That’s what moments like this do to me. Seeing Rikku headbutt Tidus with a level of affection you don’t see in the game – all because I trusted/interacted with her the most so far? It’s a small but meaningful bonus, and uniquely rich in player agency.

This is Jacob, and his big, scary eyes.

So what is it all about red drop? In a brief prologue ahead of the hands-on preview, Arkane Austin studio director Harvey Smith told the gathered press that Redfall has a “trust” mechanism. There are four main characters in the game – Jacob, Remi De La Rosa, Devinder ‘Dev’ Crousley and Layla Ellison – and you can only play as one of them. The game (as I mentioned in the proper preview) is primarily intended to be a co-op multiplayer experience, with up to four players taking on the role of each hero as you explore the fringes of the sandbox.

However, Smith does point out that Redfall is also designed to be a single-player “classic” Arkane game–the AI will fill in the boots of other characters your co-op doesn’t embody. Interacting with them pays off here–the more characters trust you and the more you explore this doomed seaside town with them, the more they’ll open up to you.

This is Lila, and she has ghostly powers.

There’s more to earning the trust of your fellow survivors than new lines of dialogue that flesh out the backstory and characters…and have tangible consequences. That could mean they saved your life when they encountered a particularly vicious vampire that appeared out of nowhere. This means they may be more inclined to use special abilities around you, which means you don’t need to feed more of your limited ammo supply to the undead at this point.

In the previews I played, I didn’t see much of this action, as the provided gameplay footage didn’t lend itself to this mechanic, but the idea of it has stuck in my head since the session. Arkane excels at storytelling – whether you play Dishonored, Deathloop or Prey, each of the studio’s games has given us great characters who are well written and acted And well behaved. Knowing this, if I choose to play crow-infested sniper Lonely Jacob, I can still learn more about the funny Lyla…just by playing.

Dev, an influencer who tracks paranormal stuff.

This is a first for Arkane. NPCs are one thing, but real characters who throw themselves into the action with you and form proper relationships…that’s what I want. It feels like a natural evolution of Colt and Julianna’s feud-filled back-and-forth in Deathloop, albeit without all the tension and Whedon-esque constant sarcasm. It’s yet another way Arkane stacks its skills in all the right places – using its top-notch world-building and writing to make the vampire fantasy offered in Redfall even more compelling.
