The Internet archives, a kind of free online library for books, films, music and software, has grown: You can now access around 21,000 films and series that come from digitized VHS tapes, such as Golem reported.
The Vista Group company, which specializes in film technology, digitally processed and uploaded various VHS tapes from the 90s and 2000s.
From movies to quirky Windows 95 guides
The offer includes well-known films like Disney's The Lion King, Pokémon – the movie or Indiana Jones: Hunter of the Lost Treasure, complete television series like M.A.S.H., but also oddities like that Microsoft Windows 95 Video Guide with Jennifer Anniston.
The quality of the videos drops significantly compared to modern technology, but still remains largely attractive. The image material is available in an analog raster representation with 240 horizontal and 320 vertical lines (about 333×480 pixels). Users also have to make a few compromises when it comes to sound, because the speakers clatter properly.
If you feel like a portion of nostalgic feelings, you should not miss the VHS archive – after all, all content is available free of charge and some are covered by a public domain license.
Some content marked as public domain
Public domain means that the content in question is not subject to copyright protection or the rights holder has declared that he will waive his copyrights. The corresponding videos in the VHS vault of the Internet Archives are included CCO 1.0 Universal marked.
However, some videos have no corresponding marking – the license situation remains unclear here. It is therefore conceivable that the rights holders could force the corresponding content to be deleted.
