Out of the shadows is the latest Giovanni research task in Pokemon Go.
It makes its debut in late March 2023 as part of the Let’s Go event and ends with an encounter and an opportunity to catch shadow regice.
From the Shadows is part of a long line of Giovanni research quests that began in 2019 with A Troubling Situation. If Out of the Shadows doesn’t appear for you, first complete the latest Giovanni quest in your quest log – the previous one was Shadowy Skirmishes from February 2023 – for this new quest to become available.
A Team Go Rocket takeover will take place in the second half of the Let’s Go event, ushering in changes to Eggs and Shadow Pokémon that will be active until the end of the event Wednesday, March 29 at 8 p.m. local time.
From Shadows Quests and Rewards
The From the Shadows Special Research can be unlocked until the next Giovanni quest and the featured Shadow Legendary Encounter release later in the year. Once unlocked, there is no time limit to complete the quest.

- Catch 2 Shadow Pokémon (20 Poké Balls)
- Purify 1 Shadow Pokémon (3 Revives)
Reward: 1,000 XP, 500 Stardust, 3 Mysterious Components

- Defeat 6 Team Go Rocket Grunts (1 Mysterious Component)
- Catch 4 Shadow Pokémon (15 Big Balls)
- Purify 2 Shadow Pokémon (1 Mysterious Component)
Reward: 1,500 XP, 1,000 Stardust, 1 Rocket Radar

Reward: 2,500 XP, 1,000 Stardust, 1 Super Missile Radar

- Find the Boss of Team Go Rocket (10 Hyper Potions)
- Defeat the Boss of Team Go Rocket (10 Ultra Balls)
- Defeat Team Go Rocket Boss (max 6 revives)
Reward: 3,000 XP, 2,000 Stardust, 2 Gold Razz Berries
You can catch the last Shadow Pokémon on Giovanni’s team once you use your Super Rocket Radar. This depends on when you play the quest; From March 2023 until the next Giovanni quest debuts, this will be the case shadow regice

Besides the above quest, a Team Go Rocket takeover also occurs in the second half of the Let’s Go event Wednesday, March 29 at 8 p.m. local timewith the following changes:
- Improved Team Go Rocket balloon spawns and PokéStop encounters
- Shadow Pokémon can forget about Charged Attack Frustration with a Charged TM
- Rocket Grunts are changing their Shadow Pokemon lineups, including Alolan Grimer, Phanpy, Treecko, Torchic, Driftloon, and more
