The next edition of E3, rumored to be held in June, is a growing concern. To the point of never seeing the light of day?
Moment of nostalgia: remember the great era of E3? There was a time when the California video game show was expected at the turn of every year. Held every year at the Los Angeles Convention Center, it went through a slow phase with the Covid-19. The pandemic has forced its organizers, ESA, to review their copy. After a canceled 2020 edition, the 2021 show took place in a 100% digital version for the first time. In 2022, however, it was simply canceled. It was already starting to smell burnt and the situation doesn’t seem poised to improve.
New publishers cancel their participation in the famous video game fair
You’ve probably seen the news: Earlier this week, Ubisoft announced that it was no longer attending E3. A message that hurts when we know that its CEO initially announced the opposite. Especially since Nintendo and Xbox had previously declined the invitation. Sony, for its part, is also likely to be one of the big absentees. And the router doesn’t stop there. A few hours ago, Devolver Digital also announced its absence. But instead of organizing its own event, the publisher turns to the competition. He announces one on Twitter return direct “novel” etc “Costs” “at the summer game festival”.
To add salt to the wound, IGN turned to other publishers for their position. If nothing has been officially announced yet, Tencent and Sega have announced to the media their intention to stay away from E3. Worse, IGN conjures up other publishers who just haven’t spoken publicly yet and are willing to do the same.
E3 cancelled: The hallway noise that disturbs
It’s therefore many of the biggest players in video games who will be missing from E3 2023. So the rumor is inevitably going around more and more: What if the show were canceled? In the iGamesNews editorial team, some argue that on the contrary, the opportunity would be perfect for independent developers to shine. Still, it’s hard to imagine that the E3 will focus primarily on the indie sector. Especially since well-known journalists are also expressing their concern. According to sources from Andy Robinson, Editor-in-Chief of VGC News, ESA could announce the cancellation of the next edition of E3 as early as this week!
It’s often difficult to separate fact from speculation about E3. But unsurprisingly, I really don’t hear anything good. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it were canceled this week – but hopefully it won’t be. I feel so sorry for everyone behind [le salon]who did everything they were asked to do.
E3, an emblematic video game fair, could therefore be canceled again. A hard blow from which he would have a hard time recovering this time. But it seems that publishers and manufacturers now prefer to bet on their own events. We are therefore waiting for an official communication from the organizers to confirm or deny the rumours. In the meantime, let us know what you think. : Do you think E3 has lived on in recent years?
