House of the Dragon is getting a Season 2 – just not anytime soon. It will be in the summer of 2024 at the earliest, and the new season should be even shorter than the first. But that’s no reason to panic – quite the opposite! Because the decision obviously has a positive side effect.

Only eight instead of ten episodes: How Deadline reports, Season 2 of House of the Dragon will come with fewer episodes than the first. Accordingly, HBO has reduced the number of episodes of the upcoming season from ten to eight.

What’s behind it? Warner Bros. Discovery is currently on a large-scale cost-saving plan, but House of the Dragon should not be directly affected. A representative from HBO confirmed to Deadline that there were much more story-related reasons behind the decision.

The big picture: So it should make more sense for a completed story arc in the second season to shorten the episodes from a total of ten to eight and thus put part of them on a third season. An important battle that was planned for Season 2 should therefore be written in the third.

This is the good news: So HBO plans much more far-reaching into the future and not just from season to season. In addition, a third season is as good as confirmed. Given House of the Dragons’ groundbreaking success, reviews and viewership, this isn’t too surprising.

How many seasons will there be in total? This has not yet been clarified at this point in time. HBO is currently hesitating between a total of three or four seasons that George RR Martin’s story about Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) is supposed to finish. Wait.
