Who needs Counter-Strike 2 anymore?

Counter-Strike 2 is coming, Valve has officially announced the sequel to its multiplayer monster, limited testing is underway. Although we have to qualify that “sequel” is the wrong word: Counter-Strike 2 will not be a standalone game, but a free upgrade for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which is scheduled to start in summer 2023.

The “2” in the title above all illustrates Valve’s self-confidence and is intended to show that this will be a big step for Counter-Strike, perhaps the biggest since the original. But is that really true?

Of course, the response and interest is tremendous. Immediately after the CS-2 announcement, fans stormed the Global Offensive servers hoping to snag a test invite. Over 1.5 million simultaneously active players marked a new record for CS:GO almost 11 years after its release.

This impressively proves how popular and successful Counter-Strike still is almost 24 years after the first beta. Why this is and whether Counter-Strike 2 can increase this success, CS noob Micha discusses in the podcast with three guests:

  • Petra Schmitz has played Counter-Strike since 2000 and accompanied GameStar for decades – until Valorant surpassed CS for her. Today she even says: Valorant is the better Counter-Strike. Can Counter-Strike 2 turn things around again?
  • Philip Elsner currently feels more at home in Hunt: Showdown and Call of Duty, but as an editorial expert for multiplayer shooters, he keeps an eagle eye on the market. He says: With the announcement of CS 2, Valve turned the shooter market upside down.
  • André Baumgartner has been playing CS since beta 7, has spent almost 750 hours of play in CS:GO alone and once even played in the ESL and the GameStar league. Since CS 2 was announced, he’s been hopping with joy all over Munich.

Together we discuss expectations for CS 2 and Valve’s future prospects in a shooter market that is becoming increasingly competitive. Will it be enough to modernize CS to continue to be the top dog? Or is CS cooking in its own juice while other successful shooters overtake left and right?

Or will CS 2 be a sure-fire success, because it is precisely the purism that makes it so appealing: purely skill-based duels without newfangled frills such as abilities and classes?

We’ll discuss it in the talk!
