Peppy Hare – Star Fox
Yes, Peppy is a rabbit — after all, that’s what his name says — but they’re from the same animal family (Leporidae), and this list would be pretty weird without your wise old companion in the Lylat system.
Peppy is probably best known for uttering the famous line “Do a barrel roll!”, but Peppy is much more than a popular meme. He is the father figure of the Star Fox team and the voice of reason, keeping the quartet together when the going gets tough. He’s the Obi-Wan of the group, and who doesn’t love and respect that? He’s been to every Star Fox game to date, and he’s also there to cheer Fox on in the Smash Bros. series. A Nintendo icon all the way and a ‘rabbit’ model to start this list.
StreetPass Bunny – Street pass
What’s with the salesbunnies anyway? In StreetPass, Zeko is the one you want to buy and buy any DLC for the free 3DS app. She’s only there as an advertisement, but with the closing of the 3DS eShop, that means her time is kind of up, really.
Well, it’s not for us. While she might look like Mii wearing a rabbit head and a white dress, she’s become a familiar face as we’ve StreetPassed with many people over the years. And some of those DLCs are damn fun though! We will remember you, StreetPass Bunny. StreetPass is forever though.
Need – Mana series
Dragon Quest there is slime. SMT has Jack Frost. The Flaw (or Seiken Densetsu) series has a rather lovely Rabite.
Part fluffy bouncing ball, part biting bunny, the Rabite is the first enemy you’ll encounter in most Mana games, making its debut back in Final Fantasy Adventure (now known as Adventures of Mana). Although they are usually sunny and yellow in color, there are Silktails (Secret of Mana) which are pink, King and Great Rabite (Trials of Mana) and the terrifying Black Rabite, the superboss in Trials.
They may look utterly adorable, but those teeth are nothing to show off and can jump quite a distance to reach you. However, that cute look allowed them to last the entire series. And really, who doesn’t want plushies?
Rabbid Rosalina – Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
We could have said Rabbid Peach, but Rabbid Rosalina won us over with her debut in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Unlike her namesake, Rabbid Rosalina is withdrawn, lazy and complains a lot. Her lethargy puts her in stark contrast to the rest of the Rabbid crew, and all of her skills involve putting enemies to sleep.
It’s clear that Ubisoft Milan loved creating her as her attack animations are hilarious, really capturing the spirit of the character. She and Rabbid Peach together are also like chalk and cheese, but that helps solidify these two Rabbids as our favorites in the franchise. And to think there was a time when we didn’t love those little white creatures…
Coco – Animal Crossing
We could have chosen any rabbit villager in Animal Crossing — from Hopkins the balloon-like bunny to Snake the ninja bunny — but Coco is one of the OGs and despite her ‘Normal’ personality, she’s one of the most unique villagers in the series. And we love her.
Coco’s Japanese name is Yayoi, a reference to Yayoi period in Japanese history when clay figures called haniwa were popular. These figures often had blank facial expressions and three open holes (for eyes and mouth), and were buried with the dead.
So Coco’s blank expression and her colorful clay-like design are from ancient history, but it gets a little unsettling when you realize that the gyroids are also based on those things. Isn’t Coco actually a bunny, but a gyroid…? Don’t think about it.
Kaze – Kaze and wild masks
One of the most dangerous bunnies on this list, Kaze is the star of this ’90s-inspired 2D platformer that pays homage to the Donkey Kong Country series. Using the power of wild masks, Kaze can gain new abilities that allow her to swim, fly, climb walls, or accelerate. Yes, Kaze is a ninja bunny who can become a tiger, shark or lizard, for example.
Kaze and the Wild Masks is all about fast and accurate platforming, navigating some beautiful pixel art levels as you dash through enemies. And you can do it as a ninja rabbit who is on a quest to save his friend. Kaze is a big love letter to the classics, but it’s so polished, with a central character so cool that we’re a little jealous of her.
Fran – Final Fantasy XII: Age of the Zodiac
Fran is the cool and calm companion of the sky pirate Balthier throughout Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. While Balthier is a bold, brash personality throughout the game, Fran is a much more reserved character, keeping her backstory and history to herself for most of the game. However, despite leaving her Eruyt Village home, she still loves her family – she just wanted some freedom. However, she misses home and occasionally shows regret about the path she has chosen.
Fran is not the first Viera — a rabbit-like race (which was only female until Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker) debuted in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance — but she’s easily the most famous. A good all-rounder in combat, but with a slight slant towards magic, her ice-cold Quickenings are dazzling and invaluable.
Cream the Rabbit – Sonic Advance 2
Much has been said about the ever-growing cast of Sonic the Hedgehog, but Cream is probably the most delightful addition. She made her surprise debut in Sonic Advance 2 as an “easy” game mode, replacing Amy (who can be unlocked) and is on a quest to save her mother Vanilla from Eggman.
Her best friend, Cheese the Chao, is always there to support her and can attack enemies on her behalf, but Cream’s magic comes in her ability to flap her giant bunny ears, which allows her to fly. Some of her most memorable moments come in Sonic Battle, where she forms a strong bond with Emerl. Otherwise, she is a wonderfully sweet bunny who always does her best. She stayed on the show for a while, and we always love to see Cream and Cheese.
Ravio – The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Brand new characters can be hit and miss in the Zelda series, but Ravio is one of the highlights of the amazing Link of Worlds. However, he pulled the rug out from under our feet!
Your faithful merchant for most of the game, Ravio dons a hood with bunny ears and helps Link by renting him items. Its design is even based on Link’s rabbit transformation in A Link to the Past. But you should definitely buy everything from this purple rabbit friend because you’ll help him retire.
We won’t spoil Ravi’s role here, but if you’ve played A Link Between Worlds, you understand why this character became popular. He’s even a playable fighter in Hyrule Warriors. A true hero, and a true favorite, then.
