Media Molecule, the Sony-owned developer of dreamshas announced that it will end live service support for the PlayStation 4 game creation system in September as it focuses on another project.
“We have made the difficult decision to end live support for Dreams after September 1, 2023 to focus on an exciting new project,” the studio said in a blog post.
The title will not be withdrawn from sale and players can continue to create, share and play in it dreams, but there will be no further updates or developer-led events like the Impy Awards, which recognize the community’s best creations. The long promised multiplayer support will not take place and the game will not be updated for PlayStation 5 or PlayStation VR 2.
dreams will also migrate to a new server at the end of May, after which players will face a 5GB storage limit for new creations “to ensure the security and stability of the dreams Servers for all players.” Existing creations uploaded prior to the move do not count towards this limit. A number of other features will be removed from the game, including Twitch integration.
Media Molecule promised to continue highlighting the best in the community dreams Publish creations on its social channels and surface creations through in-game curation even after the live service has ended.
The studio indicated this in an FAQ dreams was not successful enough to be further worked on in the future, although the developers would have liked to. “Although we have always had a desire to build on the foundation of dreams and to build on the experience, we were unable to define a sustainable path when reviewing our plans,” it said. It also confirmed that his new project is not dreams 2 or in connection with the dreams IP.
“We know this won’t be an easy message for everyone and it certainly wasn’t an easy decision – dreams was a special project for Media Molecule, and helping this growing community of game developers, tinkerers, creators, collaborators, and dreamers grow and express themselves remains one of the best things we’ve ever done. “Thank you for joining us – we look forward to joining you on our next adventure.”
