Discord late last month introduced Soundboard, a new voice calling feature for a small number of users that lets you play a short audio clip to use as a reaction, or add custom sounds to your server. Unfortunately, Discord doesn’t have a hard limit on how many times you’re allowed to react, leading to some really hilarious results.
Only a limited number of people got access to Soundboard, but it’s already causing problems. Discord doesn’t monitor the types of sounds users can upload, although it politely reminds its community to abide by copyright laws and common decency. If you’ve ever been on a Discord server, you probably understand what a futile request that is.
A user demonstrates the capabilities of the feature by repeatedly pressing the “Fuck you” button. It’s funny for a few seconds. Then you start to realize how annoying a non-stop F-Bomb audio button would be to anyone trying to have a normal conversation. Just look at how this user managed to derail their server’s general voice chat channel.

It seems you can also play multiple sounds at the same time in case a series of “Fuck yous” didn’t manage to catch anyone’s attention. For some, pressing these buttons is incredibly fun. But it seems to be a source of constant annoyance for others. Others are appalled at the possibilities of this untested technology. “I hear hentai moaning for the next three months as I join my friends.” tweeted a Discord user. Now there’s an idea I wish I couldn’t know.
Luckily, there is respite for users who value their eardrums and peace of mind. You can toggle the volume of soundboards on your servers, so muting random f-bombs is an option. Admins can also restrict soundboards to specific channels instead of allowing them in every voice chat. Hopefully the full update won’t disrupt your normal Discord experience too much.
“The Discord soundboard update is a really big deal for the most unfunny people in your life,” wrote one annoyed Discord user.
