Well so what! We are just reporting on signs of an early release – and the time has come: The first Halo has now been released on the PC as a remaster under the name Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.
And not just in the Windows Store, but also via Steam. Microsoft repeats the stunt that already led to great success with Halo: Reach.
What does that mean specifically? The first halo appears in several versions, depending on which payment package you want.
- Every owner of the 40 euros expensive Master Chief Collection receives Halo 1 »free«, regardless of the platform selected (Steam, Windows Store).
- Become Game Pass for PC subscribed, automatically receives the Master Chief Collection and thus Halo 1 and Halo: Reach. More on this in the complete range of Microsoft's subscription service.
- You can do the game too separately on Steam Buy for 10 euros, without Master Chief Collection.
Those who have been on Earth a little longer could have experienced the original PC port of Halo: Combat Evolved. He received plenty of criticism – here the remaster tries to make a clear break with the past. As on Xbox One, the new edition appears with polished graphics, plus some other bonuses.
What is in the PC version of Halo 1?
- You can switch between remaster graphics and the look of the past at any time during the game.
- Halo 1 supports 4K resolutions at 60 or more frames per second.
- Native mouse and keyboard support with individual key assignment.
- The game has been optimized for widescreen resolutions.
- The multiplayer is fully executable online including new outfit options for your Spartans.
If you want to experience one of the best shooter campaigns in gaming history alone or in co-op, you can now do it on your PC.
Of course, keep an eye on the press reviews and assessments as to whether the new Halo 1 is a better port than the old Halo 1. At least with Halo: Reach did this step excellently, as you can see here:

Halo: Reach for PC – great port and still a hassle?
What's next?
The release of Halo 1 is just another milestone in a year-round strategy to bring all old Halo parts to the PC. Until the release of Halo: Infinite at the end of the year, the Master Chief Collection on the PC from Halo 1 to Halo 4 should contain the complete Halo experience. Yes, but halo!
Whether Halo 5 also appears for the computer is another matter. By the way, if you want to know why Halo absolutely needs a reboot: Our video analysis provides the answer.
