Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc is the multinational owner of the popular HBO Max streaming service. It started out as simply HBO, but a few years ago it changed its name to HBO Max. The company decided to include Max in the name because a lot of premium content was added at the time, which, although owned by Home Box Office (HBO), was only available with an additional subscription to its cable service in the United States.
Now the multinational has decided to change its name again. From HBO Max to, simply put, Max. This is due to a merger between the content of this platform and that of Discovery+. It’s all owned by Warner Bros, but their approaches are different. The second service did not work as well as expected.
Now it will be called ‘Max’ to dry
The networks don’t seem to understand the name change so much, but the fact that HBO is disappearing from it. These acronyms are recognized around the world for delivering top-notch series and movies.and spoiling all this reputation with a simple merger between two platforms of which HBO is precisely the one that will contribute the most does not seem very wise.
This new service will offer three different subscriptions:
- Max Ad Lite ($9.99/month or $99.99/year): two simultaneous streams, 1080p HD resolution, no offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality
- no ads ($15.99/month or $149.99/year): two simultaneous streams, 1080p HD resolution, up to 30 offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality
- Max Ultimate ad-free ($19.99/month or $199.99/year): four simultaneous streams, up to 4K Ultra HD resolution, 100 offline downloads, Dolby Atmos sound quality
I wonder what will happen to all those users who subscribed to the service when HBO announced that it would never go below 4.49 dollars. They will most likely be forced to pay more, because technically the service is different, is not the one to which they subscribed. This is the problem of the so-called “price of life”.
We don’t yet know what prices it will have outside of the US, but it will be pretty close to that. In any case, it is very likely that although this new service will be called Max, many people will continue to call it HBO. This is something that can work in favor of Warner Bros, but we still don’t know what will happen in the future.
