Young people today have everything very easily. If you want to listen to a specific song from your favorite artist, just start Spotify and you’ll find it in seconds; in my day, it was much harder, if not impossible, to even find the song that sounded good to you. But when you found it, you would surely reproduce it in Winamp.
[Sección retro: ¿Qué fue de Winamp?]
My grandfather’s conversation about chives is not over. Winamp was the best you could install on your limited computer storage. It was a powerful, fast and, above all, highly customizable music player with ‘skins’. Of course, hardly anyone uses it anymore, and for good reason; most people have made the jump to streaming and if we want to play music locally there are more modern alternatives.
winamp is back
Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise us that Winamp’s comeback happened in this way. The new version of the program is now a web application focused on streaming, although its creators promise that in the coming months it will also be able to play music files stored on your computer or mobile.
Yes, that assumes the new Winamp has nothing to do with the old, which makes sense. After all, the name license has changed hands several times and now belongs to the Llama band (a reference to the first track that played when you started the program).
Llama Group’s goal is to monetize Winamp by taking advantage of its still huge user base of 83 million people worldwide; that’s why he first turned it into a streaming app very similar to Spotify, but that’s just the first step. He also presented the “Fanzone”, a section of the app that will give us access to exclusive content from our favorite artists; and among the plans was the integration of NFTs, despite the fact that they seem to have lost most people’s interest.
It’s easy to read all of this and think the worst, and you’re not alone. So far, there’s absolutely nothing of the original Winamp in this web application; in fact, there’s not much music either. So far, Llama Group has only managed to win over a few musicians angry at Spotify and its controversial revenue sharing. Unless you’re a total “hipster” and only like music no one has ever heard, you won’t find much here.
The good news is that the original Winamp can still be downloaded from the official page, but only for Windows and not for mobile, of course. But it should be adapted to a web app version in the coming months, so if you want to continue listening to your music with that touch of nostalgia, you better hurry and download it.
