With this new installment of JV Facts, JV invites you to discover (or rediscover) the mysteries of the best game about the friendly neighborhood spider.
If you’re familiar with the world of superheroes, you already know that it’s a world that likes to relate to itself. In many comics, movies, video games or cartoons there are many references to other superheroic universes. Marvel’s Spider-Man by Insomniac Games is no exception to the rule and contains references to other Spider-Man works. More specifically, Sam Raimi’s trilogy of feature films released in the 2000s.For example, if you stop the Kingpin, the friendly neighborhood spider will be hanging from a web, the earth is upside down. He then asks his enemy if it’s time for a kiss, an apparent reference to the kiss-in-the-rain scene with Mary Jane in the first Spider-Man film. Then, as you battle Mister Negative, Peter Parker stops a subway train with his superpower, a reference to the famous train scene in Spider-Man 2 where Spider-Man performs the same feat. Finally, to come full circle, on foot you’ll have the opportunity to greet the residents of New York with a distinctive sign that inevitably makes you think of Dark Peter Parker’s dance from the third Spider-Man feature film. In general, the title Insomniac Games also refers to other characters from the spider universe : Walking around an Oscorp office, in a corner you can find the Green Goblin’s prototype bombs (do you think it will be in the second game?). Then at the top of the map you’ll find a tomb to collect your thoughts, it’s the tomb of Uncle Ben, the most important character in Peter Parker’s development. The references to Spider-Man are sometimes more subtle. The voice actor for Spider-Man in the game is Donald Reignoux, he had already played the spidery superhero in Marc Webb’s two Amazing Spider-Man movies back in the 2010s, you couldn’t find a better voice for the character, even he allows to include a few small French-language references. The weaver’s soul is fully preserved in the title, the hero has no blood on his hands, it is an important value for him. So if you’re unlucky enough to throw an enemy against a wall or throw them off the top of a building, Spider-Man will constantly use his webs to prevent his death. Finally, Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man has a rich and complete development for a single video game. In addition to his in-game story, you can find various backpacks scattered throughout New York that contain information about Peter Parker’s past. The 28 different costumes to unlock are also an important development element for our friendly neighborhood spider. A Spider-Man game, but also a Marvel game
It’s pretty exciting to see that the developers put a lot of effort into respecting the Spider-Man universe, but also the Marvel universe. Because the insomniac games title is a game about the friendly neighborhood spider, but also about the superhero company in general, something that will please all fans.
