Beyond Warcraft, the Super Mario Bros. movie has become the biggest video game adaptation of all time.
After a strong opening weekend, the Italian plumber proved he’s capable of making a lot of money, and as Variety reports, the Super Mario Bros. movie has grossed more than $500 million worldwide, cementing its status as The status of the number one video game adaptation of all time. As of this writing, the Mario movie has grossed $531,821,843 worldwide, with more than half of that coming from the United States. Not to mention that the film beat Frozen 2 at the box office debut. All in all, the numbers could make Miyamoto very happy.
It also managed to do all of this in just two weeks after it was released earlier this month (April 5), so it still has time to absorb more content. The previous worldwide top-grossing record holder was Warcraft, an adaptation of Blizzard’s long-running franchise, but with the success of Mario, Warcraft came in second. It also bumped Detective Pikachu to third and Rampage apparently to fourth, which I personally didn’t realize was such a success. That’s the power The Rock brings to you.
On top of that, it made more than $100 million more than Sonic the Hedgehog 2, continuing the race for a movie adaptation. It’s not particularly surprising that a Mario movie has done so well. He’s a household name and he spans a wide age range. He is Mario! You know him and you love him. Unless you’re a reviewer, the average reviews won’t be that high. But when you’re making that much money, I doubt anyone at the top of the food chain pays much attention to reviews.
