The Great Remake Flood: Where Will It End?
Welcome to our Talk Re-Imagined, Re-Written, Re-Inforced and Re-Volution, the remaster version of a normal talk including a new bonus level!
Hardly any brand is safe from a major makeover: The Last of Us, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Diablo 2, Silent Hill, Crash Bandicoot or even World of Warcraft. But where is the big wave of remakes supposed to take us and will there only be remakes at some point?
To find out, we had a heated discussion about the pros and cons of remakes at CAGGTUS in Leipzig.
When does a remake even make sense? What makes a perfect remake and what makes a half-hearted one? How far can and should remakes deviate from the original? Is it better if a remake comes from the original team?
GameStar Talk: All videos and podcasts at a glance
Géraldine sees Resident Evil 2 as the perfect remake, being both a perfect remake and a standalone game. Colleague Dennis from GamePro is a huge Demon’s Souls fan – but thinks that the remake doesn’t go far enough in the end. GamePro’s Eleen, on the other hand, thinks Final Fantasy 7 Remake overdid it.
Based on the criticism of the Silent Hill 2 remake, we find that the older the graphics of the original, the harder the remake – because while back then many details were left to our imagination, they have to be filled in remakes. And not everyone is happy with the result.
What we can learn about remakes from the series on The Last of Us, what reasons remakes can have besides mere nostalgia and why fans are sometimes the best remake developers can be seen either in the video above or you can hear it here in the handy podcast format:
