Sony: Studio acquired by former Destiny veterans

Sony has once again grabbed the petty cash and incorporated another development studio. Said studio should primarily take care of a new Playstation multiplayer title.

Sony has been on a bit of a shopping spree again, quite obviously to speed up plans for upcoming multiplayer and live service games. Sony had announced months ago that it would get various projects rolling in this area.

As has now been officially announced, Sony has taken over the still young Firewalk Studios, which has been working on a AAA multiplayer title for Sony since 2021. This is particularly interesting because the studio consists in part of seasoned Destiny veterans, including game director Ryan Ellis, the former creative director of Destiny.

“Since announcing our publishing partnership with ProbablyMonsters and Firewalk in 2021, we’ve been continually impressed by the team’s ambitions to create a modern multiplayer game that connects players in new and innovative ways,” said PlayStation Studios CEO Herman Hulst in the announcement. “The studio shares our passion for creating inspiring worlds with exceptional gameplay, and we plan to continue investing in their mission. We’re delighted that Firewalk is bringing its technical and creative expertise to PlayStation Studios to grow our live service and to offer the players something really special.”

The takeover once again confirms Sony’s multiplayer ambitions for the Playstation. As is well known, Sony took over the Destiny developer Bungie a good year ago, as did Haven, Jade Raymond’s new studio, which is also said to be working on a multiplayer title. We know Jade Raymond very well as co-creator of Assassin’s Creed. However, there is no concrete information about the ongoing Firewalk Studios project.
