Game news Harry Potter Quidditch Champions: Do we need to worry?
Without warning, Warner has decided to unveil a new game set in the Harry Potter universe. After Hogwarts Legacy, it will soon be the turn of the Harry Potter Quidditch champions to enchant the players. But is he really capable of it?
Unbroken Studios for Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions
Surely you have seen the info pass: Warner Bros. announced a game focused on Quidditch, responding to the evocative name Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and developed by Unbroken Studios. what is the concept Now you can take part in Quidditch matches via competitive multiplayer play that will be available on PC and consoles (unspecified yet). You can also create and customize your own champions. The game is currently in testing with limited participation and we have not seen any gameplay images. Also no information about the output window. For the moment it is enough to be content with a few recordings and a video presentation. Of course it’s fascinating. Especially since the expectations among fans of the universe, but also new players who have become addicted to Hogwarts Legacy after the release of Hogwarts Legacy, are high: Hogwarts Legacy.
Suffice it to say that there are people who rely heavily on Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. Since 2003, the magical sport no longer has the right to an adaptation. At that time, EA Games took on this difficult task. But for this new title, a question arises: Does Unbroken Studios have shoulders? Because yes, it’s not a well-known studio. Currently, his teams are turning hands on the development of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which the public doesn’t seem to be really excited about right now. Other games on his list? Fantastic Plastic Squad and Fractured Lands. The upside is that both are multiplayer games. So the studio already has good experiences at this level. The downside is that these titles clearly failed to impress. They weren’t even very well received by critics and gamers. Suffice it to say that tackling such a huge project that will continue even after the game’s release might seem like a lot for such a small studio.
But it is very difficult to assess the potential of such a little-known studio. When Hogwarts Legacy was announced, the same question arose. The choice of Avalanche Software (Disney Infinity…), as well as the lack of big names in the industry for such a large license, was a cause for concern. But the studio met the challenge with flying colors, thanks in particular to the support of Warner Bros., but also thanks to a team of enthusiasts and quality developers. In a way, Avalanche Software has proved that in such cases, judging a book by its cover is pointless. But that doesn’t mean there’s no reason to worry about Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions…
Do we really want a Quidditch game?
So yes, in the Harry Potter universe, Quidditch has a special aura. Everyone loves this flying sport and dreams of becoming the new star catcher. So much so that when his absence from Hogwarts Legacy was announced, many players immediately rebelled. So far, they’ve been falling back on the hope that potential Quidditch DLC will arrive later. Today we understand better why that was obviously not planned. We should of course have expected screams of joy, but the reaction to the announcement of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions has been mixed. Some would obviously have preferred a DLC to a separate game. And that’s not really surprising.
Because if Quidditch seems an incredible sport on paper, it’s often another pair of sleeves in play. You may have fond memories of the 2003 Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup game. But if the game was nice overall, it really wasn’t free from flaws. No, this isn’t the perfect Quidditch game we want to remember, but a title with risky handling, rather poor content, and particularly unbalanced. So much so that unless you were an extreme enforcer, we quickly felt like we had made the loop, and the joy of the first few moments wore off after a couple of hours. In the end, the best Quidditch games are almost the mini-games that come with the adaptations of the books.
If Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is obviously not going to play on the same court (as a multiplayer and competitive game), it risks taking the full brunt of the same limits. Because quite simply, Quidditch is not such an easy game to convert into a video game. Simply putting together a flight system that is not too difficult to handle and at the same time causes real sensations is a daunting task. In addition, there is the balance, be it on the level of attack, defense, but also the different positions. And of course it is necessary to adjust the rules to make the game fun. As I’m sure you understood, the task is colossal.
And even if Unbroken Studios succeeds in this part, there is nothing to suggest that the game will stand the test of time. Because that’s the whole point of these kinds of titles: keeping players interested. The problem is that with titles as effective as Rocket League or Fortnite, it’s difficult to win players’ hearts, even with a working gameplay. Roller Champions, Knockout City… Many of them paid the price. Once the madness is over, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions could meet the same fate. And if you find yourself with bots in your team (which a priori should require 7 players), you are not sure if you will continue to enjoy the game. Of course, that’s not what we want in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, but as I’m sure you understood, the task promises to be difficult. In the end, a DLC might have been less risky… In any case, we shouldn’t be too hasty in declaring victory.
