To say that the movie Super Mario Bros. was successful would be an understatement. The film has been available to watch in theaters for several weeks now, and there hasn’t been a single week in which the film hasn’t broken animation records at the box office.

Its third weekend in theaters was no exception. The Warp reported that the Nintendo and Illumination film collected an additional $58 million at the United States box office in its third weekend. This broke another record at the box office for animation. Universal now expects the film to surpass $850,000,000 worldwide before this weekend is over.

If so, it has a chance to surpass the $939,000,000 global gross that Minions: The Rise of Gru earned. That would make the movie Super Mario Bros. made it the highest-grossing animated film in the post-COVID shutdown era. Even if it doesn’t make it worldwide, The Mario Movie is expected to reach $434 million in North America alone by the end of this weekend. This would surpass the domestic box office total of Minions: The Rise of Gru.
