If you’re new to the franchise or just want to remember a bit of Diablo history, In this news we will give you a brief summary so that you can put yourself in context. Since its inception, the story that this Blizzard game has offered us has managed to captivate millions of people, so we already predict that it is worth playing the episodes or, at least, getting into the story with this summary. I won’t keep you waiting any longer, so prepare to walk with me through hell.

This is how it all started in Diablo

It all starts with a great war, Since the dawn of time, the soldiers of Light and Darkness have waged a fierce battle over who will take control of all creation.; this era became known as The Great Controversy. On the side of the Light we had the angels and the archangels, how could it be otherwise, they faced the dark forces which were led by the three primary demons: Devil, Baal and Mephisto. This conflict lasted for countless centuries until something changed in the world…

After an uncountable period of time, man appeared, who presumably, with his only choice being to choose between good and evil, could decide the fate of this battle. The Great Controversy seemed to end thanks to an insignificant creature like humans. From that moment the war was renamed and we started the war of sin. As you well know, angels and demons, unlike humans, do not live on a physical plane. These were in the spiritual plane, which is why certain angels and demons who wanted to ally themselves strongly with humans came to break the veil that separated the two worlds.

Diablo is the demon that gives the franchise its name.

As expected, not everyone agreed, and these actions made several secondary demons nervous: Belial and Azmodan. These two demons did not see with a good eye that the human was the key to the divine war that was taking place. It is because of this that the demons led a great rebellion in Hell resulting in the exile of the three primary demons to the mortal world, to the physical plane. Diablo, Ball and Mephisto were expelled, this turning point became known as The Dark Exile. But the story does not end there, the main demons had a clear objective.

Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto infected humans, injecting them with their essence of terror, destruction, and hatred. Then came the wars and the senseless deaths that for years caused infinite suffering to humanity. But when all seemed lost, Archangel Tyrael brought together the most powerful human magicians and thus the order of Horadrim was created. The mission of these people would be to encase the three main demons in fragments called Soul Stones that were created on top of Mount Arreat; in the room of La Piedra del Mundo.

Logically, it was not an easy process, especially when the demons discovered that they could be even stronger and thus avoid the powers of the Soul Stones if they possessed a human body. Faced with this, the Horadrim had no choice but to kill the ship in order to capture the final essence of the main demon. Little by little, they understood: the magicians managed to lock up Mephisto and kept the stone in a tower located in the town of Kurast. When Baal’s turn came, he broke his stone to avoid capture, however, the leader of the Horadrim, Tal Rasha, decided to embed the fragments of The Soul Stone in his chest and use his body as a vessel to contain Baal. The magician was buried in a secret vault in the desert of Lut Gholein.

After these fierce fights, there was only one left to stop… Yes, you guessed it. After all that, all that was missing was Diablo. After a hard fight, this last demon was locked up and buried in a large underground temple. This was located in a remote city called Tristan or Tristram.

After a few centuries, the Horadrim disbanded due to disagreements between the wizards who made up the order. Then came King Leoric, who named Tristan the capital of his kingdom and built a cathedral right above the temple the Horadrim had built to house Diablo. Somehow, the Master Demon got part of his consciousness through the Soul Stone and managed to take control of Archbishop Lazarus. This Archbishop attempted to deliver King Leoric’s body to Diablo, however, he resisted and resulted in a madness that would cause Tristan’s destruction.

King Leoric has seen better days…

The worst act that the mad king, Leoric, committed was to declare war on the neighboring kingdom, Westmarch. By this time, most of Tristan’s warriors were already doomed. The king’s madness didn’t stop there, but got worse when his son, Albrecht, was kidnapped. After all these events, Tristan’s soldiers staged a revolution and ended King Leoric’s life. However, the king cast a curse on the soldiers with his last breath; they should serve Darkness forever.

After a few events, people found out that Archbishop Lazarus was the one who kidnapped Prince Albretch and handed him over to Diablo. The Demon’s Soul Stone was embedded in the prince’s mind, allowing his body to transform into a real monster due to Diablo’s possession.

DEVIL II

The story of Diablo II takes place shortly after the end of the first opus. On this occasion, the player will be an adventurer who decides to investigate the cause of why great destruction is taking place in the world of Sanctuary, starting of course with the warrior corrupted by Diablo. The story is divided into four acts, on this arduous path, the player will face two lesser demons: Andariel and Duriel; and of course, two of the three main demons: Mephisto and Diablo.

On this occasion, the hero corrupted by Diablo manages to get his hands on one of the Soul Stones and that’s when he frees Mephisto. And of course, through research and cunning, Baal is freed as well. Marius (who tells us part of the story) is to blame for this, since he was a person tricked by Diablo into releasing the demons. Faced with all this chaos, the Archangel Tyrael orders him to take The Soul Stone to Hell to destroy it.

As the story progresses, the player manages to defeat Mephisto and Diablo in their respective worlds and of course destroy the Soul Stones as well. But there was still one left, that of Baal. This game ends with Marius visiting Tyrael and telling him he couldn’t enter Hell to destroy the Stone. Upon receiving the stone, the visitor is revealed to actually be the superior demon Baal., this scene marks the start of the Diablo II expansion. After Baal’s escape and after revealing to Marius that he had impersonated Tyrael, the danger still existed despite the fall of Mephisto and Diablo. This time, the real Tyrael sends you to kill Baal.

However, a little later we discover that the demons knew how to corrupt the Soul Stones and therefore the revolution that happened in the first episode that led to the exile of the three main demons was a farce. Diablo, Mephisto and Baal planned this to reach the real world. Now Baal is looking for the World Stone and his reasons are unclear.

Diablo III

After the previous two episodes, the world was devastated. Although it seemed like a possible ending, things don’t end there. The Ecumenical Stone was responsible for protecting the sanctuary from these armies of angels and demons, but it was destroyed. The protection it offered was shattered, and a time of destruction and darkness once again ravaged the Earth.

Few people have managed to survive to tell the story of the Sanctuary, indeed, many are unaware of the existence of this Protective Stone… Therefore, nor are they able to assimilate all that is about to happen due to their absence. However, those who know what happened know that Azmodan and Belial have yet to claim sanctuary.

It all begins with a star falling from Heaven, an unmistakable sign that the end of time is near. Get ready for the Last Judgment. Meanwhile, people are looking for answers in prophecies, they have no hope before a big demon army attack. This time, Diablo III’s plot focuses on little demons; Belial and Azmodan. Additionally, the Black Soul Stone also comes into play, an artifact that contains the souls of previously defeated demons.

Malthael will have a major role at the end of the third installment.

After progressing through the game and Diablo finally being defeated in the High Heavens by the Nephalem (our game’s protagonist), Tyrael retrieves The Black Soul Stone. Already with all seven demon souls inside her, Archangel Tyrael knows it’s too dangerous to leave her in the hands of humans or angels.so he decides to bring her back to the Sanctuary with six Horadrim and hide her in the tomb of Rakkis, first king of Westmarch.

However, when it was all about to end, Malthaelan ancient archangel who disappeared 20 years earlier after the destruction of The World Stone, decides to ambush this group. Malthael calls himself “the Angel of Death” so he decides to kill all but one of the Horadrim. Of course, he also neutralizes Tyrael and that’s when he steals the Black Stone that this expedition was supposed to hide.

All this will start the new story of the saga, Diablo IV introduces us to Lilith, creator of Sanctuary with Tyrael. From there, everything remains to be seen, but from what we were able to verify in the beta, the story of this new opus will be much darker and more adult than the previous ones. Meet at the Sanctuary.
