As you’ve probably seen by now, the first impressions of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have officially been released. Nintendo has already shown off a lot of select footage from the game, but one thing that hasn’t been confirmed yet is the sequel’s performance and resolution.
Fortunately, it looks like previews were able to get an idea of how the new entry works thanks to live footage. As he pointed out Nintendo World Reportthis version of Tears of the Kingdom was launched on 30 frames per second with a resolution of 1600 x 900 (900p) in anchored mode of operation. It was also mentioned how the game ran “consistently” at this frame rate in most cases, but there were crashes at hot moments.
In our hands here at Nintendo Life, our Senior Video Producer Alex Olney had similar feedback – noting that the performance was mostly “solid” but there were moments where it was poor:
Alex: “Performance is mostly solid, but we did notice a few instances when using Ultrahand where the frame rate took a noticeable hit. Not that it broke the game or ruined our enjoyment, but it would have been nice to see such wrinkles ironed out.”
And in case you were wondering, the original game also worked 30 frames per second (at least after a series of updates that improved certain parts of the game) and kept the same resolution as the new game in docked mode.
Tears of the Kingdom’s manual resolution is expected to be the same as Breath of the Wild – running at a target frame rate of 30 frames per second with a dynamic resolution of 720pbut this has not been confirmed at this stage.
Note that this is all based on a preview, so the game’s performance and resolution may not necessarily reflect the final version. Game performance could also improve over time with an update. Be on the lookout for more details on the game’s performance and resolution when it releases on May 12.
