We may be on the cusp of a new golden age when it comes to handheld consoles; only these are not consoles, but computers with a different format. The fault lies with the new, more efficient and powerful processors like the Ryzen Z1 used by the recently announced ROG Ally; but it’s not the only console that promises a full PC gaming experience.
A gaming computer in the hands
The AOKZOE A1 Pro has the honor of being the console that will launch AMD’s new Tyzen 7 7840U processor, named “Phoenix”; the importance of this release is beyond doubt, as it is the first mobile processor capable of reaching a frequency of 5.1 Ghz in a core, as well as an integrated Radeon 780M graphics card capable of reaching a frequency of 2200 MHz.
These numbers might not tell you much, so what if I told you that thanks to this it will be possible to play cutting-edge titles at 60 frames per second and in Full HD resolution? This is the surprising promise of Chinese manufacturer AOKZOE, stating that games like Forza Horizon 5 run at 60 fps with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels and with high graphics.
Other games like Genshin Impact are also capable of running at the screen’s native resolution and 60 frames per second, although other titles require a reduction in graphics quality or resolution. Elden Ring runs at 60 fps, but only if we drop the resolution to 1280 x 800 and adjust the graphics, as is the case with Spider-Man: Miles Morales, God of War 4 and Monster Hunter: World. To achieve this, in addition to mounting the new processor, AOKZOE has decided to abandon the 16 GB of RAM, and the console will only be available with 32 GB or 64 GB.
Still, that’s unheard of in a system like this, and it was something that until now was only possible on a laptop with a dedicated processor and graphics card, with the cooling that it needs, of course. These figures far exceed those obtained with a Steam Deck, but the A1 Pro promises to be lighter (729 grams) and close to a Nintendo Switch.
It’s amazing how far the industry has come in just a few years, with releases like the aforementioned Steam Deck showing that there’s a demand for truly portable gaming devices.
The rest of the system seems to be up to snuff, with an 8-inch IPS display boasting a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, with a brightness of 350 nits. The 65Wh battery can be recharged quickly and is compatible with chargers up to 100W. It also promises features we’ve come to expect such as joysticks without the dreaded ‘drift’.
The AOKZOE A1 Pro has already secured its funding on Indiegogo, just one day after its appearance on the platform; but it can still be reserved, with a starting price of 725 dollars for the 32 GB + 512 GB version only for Indiegogo users (it will cost 906 dollars if bought in store). It is available in two colors, white or dark blue, with customizable RGB lighting.
