Star Wars: Rumor: Finally a new strategy game in the works?

finally, game, Rumor, Star, Strategy, Wars, works

Yesterday was known to be Star Wars Day – and that’s why there were a number of campaigns and articles on the Internet. There were also rumors that there could finally be a real-time strategy game in the Star Wars universe again in the foreseeable future.

Real-time strategy fans with a soft spot for the Star Wars universe may have some hope that a new genre spin-off within the popular sci-fi franchise is in the works. This has not yet been officially confirmed – but one after the other.

Star Wars games have been around for years, but it’s been a long time since the last real-time strategy game. The last title in this direction was the mobile game Star Wars Commander from 2014, which was discontinued in 2020. The last full-fledged genre representative would be Star Wars: Empire at War – and that was released in 2006, so it’s quite a few years old. Back then you were allowed to command the fleets of the Empire or the Rebellion – and that was well received by fans and critics, so that Empire at War is considered one of the better Star Wars games ever.

Apparently, Empire at War fans also include Josh West, Auto with the English-speaking colleagues at GamesRadar. He had published an article on the occasion of Star Wars Day and listed his ten best Star Wars games. In a related tweet, he wondered if there was a possibility for a sequel to Empire at War from developers Relic or Blackbird. And from here it gets exciting!

The tweet, in turn, called Andy Robinson, owner and editor of the Video Games Chronicle, into action – and he seems to have inside information. According to him, a new, previously unannounced real-time strategy game in the Star Wars universe is already in the works.

West then assumed that Robinson was referring to Respawn Entertainment’s previously unnamed strategy game being developed by newly formed affiliated studio Bit Reactor; this title was pretty quietly confirmed by EA in January, although details are not yet public. Anyway, Robinson doesn’t mean this game.

Instead, there seems to be another RTS in the Star Wars universe that Robinson says is “a big name developer” is working on – and that leaves room for further speculation. Petroglyph would be a possibility, but is also busy with Earthbreakers, and of course Relic Entertainment! Finally, the development work on Homeworld 3 and the console version of Company of Heroes 3 should slowly but surely come to an end! And: Creative Assembly and Paradox Interactive would also be potential candidates. We will of course keep you up to date on the further development of this rumor!
