The robot vacuum is a device that has its risks in terms of cybersecurity, but it also has its advantages, and there is a trick that will allow you to access your Roomba’s camera live.

This is a feature only available on certain models of Roomba vacuum cleaners and it can help you know what is going on in your house at any time.
It’s a totally private option and one that these vacuums offer by default – although it’s disabled by default – so you don’t have to worry about a possible security breach.
How to use your Roomba as a security camera
The first thing you need to know about this option is that it is only available on models Roomba J7, J7+ and Combo, and you’ll need the iRobot Home app to access the option. The steps to follow are:
- Open the app.
- Go to the Beta section, at the bottom.
- Enable the remote recording option.
Once you’ve done that, you’ll just have to go to the main screen of the app to order a new job from the vacuum, and the remote recording should appear among one of these options.
When pressed it will allow you to take the robot vacuum anywhere in the house so you can take a look around your home, but you have to keep in mind that it has to be an area that the device has already located on the map.
The visibility and angle offered by these vacuums is not comparable to a good security camera, but it can save you some trouble. If you’re looking for more height in the image, more detail and even motion detection, you should bet on a camera for your home, like the Google Nest.
