There used to be big competition between Sega and Nintendo, for many years publishers Microsoft have filled this scenario with Xbox and Sony with PlayStation.

Microsoft’s Xbox boss Phil Spencer admits in a podcast that he lost in the eighth generation of consoles to Xbox One and PS4. At that time, gamers would have started to build their own digital game libraries. Since then, many gamers would remain loyal to the “ecosystem” of each platform, whether Xbox or PlayStation. Microsoft would not have had a correspondingly strong offer at this turning point.

Spencer also doesn’t think Sony fans would sell their PS5 for a Microsoft-exclusive Starfield, even if it got dream ratings from critics. “That will never happen,” says Spencer, referring to the aforementioned loyalty to one’s own ecosystem.

There are other perspectives

Spencer may be right in part, but there are other perspectives on this assessment. Many game fans have several gaming platforms at home, such as a Nintendo Switch or a PC, and they can also enjoy Microsoft-exclusive games on the computer.

Also, while Spencer is talking about digital game libraries, Xbox Game Pass should be brought to mind. After all, this includes such a digital game collection in which completely new games can even be played free of charge immediately upon release, and Microsoft is enormously successful with the Game Pass.

The last word has not yet been spoken in the competition, especially not because Sony wants to prevent Microsoft from taking over Activision-Blizzard.
