Yesterday’s Google I/O was full of news, especially about AI, but there was also room for veiled criticism of Apple and various surprises that interest us even if they do not concern the Apple devices. One of these surprises is that WhatsApp had its moment of glory by presenting its native application for WearOS.
For WhatsApp, this is an important step, because until now applications beyond iOS and Android have always been wrapped web pages or notification-dependent plugins, as has happened. in watchOS. And of course, that makes you wonder.
All the functions of your WhatsApp, on the watch
In WABetaInfo they were able to independently detect this app for WearOS, getting screenshots like the one you see just above to be able to link an Android’s WhatsApp to the WearOS app. You can see the moment of the presentation in the 83 minute of the opening speech:
With this new native app, anyone with a WearOS smartwatch will be able to view their chats, start new conversations, record audio messages
There are many more functions than we currently have in watchOS, where there is no WhatsApp app itself, but rather a “help” system that mirrors iOS notifications on the Apple Watch. From there we can receive and respond to messages, but in a more basic way than if we had a complete and native application.
But let’s look at the glass half full: the fact that WhatsApp has worried about having a native WearOS app may mean we’ll soon see the same on watchOS. You may need to spend some time for this, but the very competition between the platforms should produce a more level playing field between them.
