Tomorrow is a big day: Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is finally coming to Nintendo Switch and believe us, the title will be talked about for a while. Just before the release of the game we are told some information about the map of the title.

Upside down

Tomorrow, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will finally be available for all Nintendo Switch owners and yes, this new work is simply masterful. Our full review has just come out and can be read at this address: qFor those scared of a Breath of the Wild 1.5 release, rest easy: this sequel really packs a punch.

However, it is likely that this so-called version 1.5 was considered for a while. Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi spoke about the Hyrule map in an official interview by Nintendo: Imagine that at the start the map really had to be the same as in the 2017 game instead of having the whole famous sky part.

Just like the locations you know by heart, we know all about Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Knowing this, we thought it was possible to create new gameplay.

That is why we made it clear in the original proposal that the framework will not change, and it was even an important principle. Even when I shared this with the team members here, there was no objection and we all agreed with this idea from that point on.

Go to seventh heaven

So as you know The Tears of the Kingdom map will be much more vertical: there will be a terrestrial part (which we already know in outline), but also a whole upper part, directly in the sky. And that is exactly what makes this airy and quite poetic atmosphere; maybe even more than the previous episode could offer.

Technical director Takuhiro Dohta also made a clear statement: about that heavenly part: It came to him while playing… Wii Sports Resort.

When I was working on programming for Wuhu Island during the development of Wii Sports Resort, I remembered that (Shigeru) Miyamoto-san said he wanted to “turn game levels into characters”. What he meant by that was to create an island and use it as a base to build different types of gameplay into different games.

The idea of making new discoveries in the same environment popped into my head. I wanted to try this idea with other titles and I think this game would benefit from this approach.

See you tomorrow to fire up the Switch…unless you’ve already received the game at home.
