As it turns out, the voice actor who voiced Zelda in Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom didn’t even know she was auditioning for the role.
Saying Nintendo is mysterious is like saying you need air to breathe: the two go hand in hand. Obviously, this is especially the case with Tears of Kingdoms, a game that only really got a proper trailer this year, just a few months before it came out. So it’s no surprise to hear that Zelda voice actress Patricia Somerset wasn’t told that the character she was auditioning for was actually the princess of Hyrule.
In an interview with IGN, Summersett talked about her role as Zelda and how she came to take on the role in the first place. Not surprisingly, she wasn’t told much until she auditioned. “It looks like an RPG fantasy game,” Summersett shared. “I don’t have any information other than the role of the princess with the burden on her shoulders.”
A few weeks after the audition, she got word that she would be playing Zelda — though she’s thankful she didn’t know that before the audition. “I have a feeling that if I knew what that was, I’d be overthinking it,” she said. “I’m glad I’m blind.”
When asked if Zelda’s role would be bigger in this sequel, Somerset appropriately kept it under wraps, since there wasn’t that much voice acting in Breath of the Wild, though he did say “if you look at In the trailer, you see that the gameplay represents a really big adventure. Whenever you start over after playing a character, you want to stretch as far as you can.”
On the topic of whether or not she thinks fans will be happy when it comes to fan service, the answer is a resounding “Yes. Oh yes.” Obviously, that could mean anything, but being a Zelda fan myself I’m still pretty excited. All we need now is the ability to play as Zelda himself–and if we’re lucky, it’s possible.
