The original Star Wars trilogy, comprising the episodes IV, V and VI, is among the most beloved and best-rated stories in the franchise. It is very rare to hear a veteran say that any other movie is better than one of the episodes mentioned. And they are for less! All three are a gem… although one of them could have been very different.
He Episode VI: Return of the Jedi It was going to have a much darker and murkier ending than what we ended up seeing in movie theaters and in our homes. George Lucas
And why Revenge of the Jedi? It has to do with the first idea they had for the ending of the film. After Darth Vader’s death, Luke Skywalker would have took his father’s helmet to put it on and pronounce “Now I am Vader“. He would have become the main destroyer of the Rebels with the Princess Leia
Kasdan said in various interviews that it was “what should happen“. Fortunately, Lucas ruled out both the title and the conversion of Luke and the death of Han Solo. His explanation was very simple: revenge is not one of the main qualities of a Jedi. He wouldn’t have sensed such a drastic change in attitude… especially after Yoda’s training.
How different the Star Wars universe would be if George Lucas hadn’t discarded these ideas! He was always clear that return of the jedi it was a hopeful family movie, and the original ideas didn’t fit with all of that. And luckily because otherwise doing the last trilogy would have been complicated.
