according to a Maintenance post from MALthe hacker changed every anime title in the database to “Let’s all love Lain‘ and manipulated user ratings so that animation studio Triangle Staff’s late ’90s show was only rated ‘very good’, ‘great’ or ‘masterpiece’ – the site’s top three rating metrics. The hacker also sent a javascript alert to show a popup to users visiting their MAL According to MAL, a profile or list was created while the website was under attack.
“To protect our community, we cannot restore the site until we are completely certain that all hacking methods used by the attacker have been identified and fixed,” MAL wrote in its emergency maintenance post. “Our team is working diligently to bring MyAnimeList back online as soon as possible. We thank you for your understanding during this difficult time and apologize for the ongoing inconvenience.”
On Friday, MAL’s official Twitter account informed users that it expects: “to resume service in about 22 hours” from the time the post was written (12:08 am CST)

WTF is Serial experiments laid?
Serial experiments laid is a psychological horror anime that follows a Hikomori (locked up) middle school student named Lain Iwakura. After receiving a strange email from a deceased classmate, Chisa Yomoda, revealing that she is not dead but lives in the virtual world The wiredLain gets caught up in a series of bizarre events that ultimately lead her to question the difference between the real world and the internet.
Overall, the show was fairly popular in its heyday. In 1998 it won the Awarded the Excellence Prize of the Japan Media Arts Festival for “his willingness to question the meaning of contemporary life” and his “extraordinarily philosophical and profound questions”.

Hacking TIMES recommended Serial experiments laid is hilarious in a cosmic sense, considering the show’s focus on how unhealthy being constantly online can be and how easily people tend to be swayed by recommendations from cyberspace. For example, after Lain sees an ad promising to make friends online, she becomes too addicted to the internet’s enticing promises of a better life and becomes almost inseparable from the virtual world.
My whole anime is gone?! no you are good
A major concern of the MAL Users are wondering if hacking the site would result in the curated list of their shows being deleted from their profiles or, worse, their personal information being exposed. Regarding the latter: MAL says its user information is “handled and stored in a manner consistent with government regulations” and that its investigation into the hack “did not identify a data breach of our users’ personal information.”
“We can restore the affected anime database titles and user list values to pre-attack levels,” MAL wrote.
At the time of publication, MAL’s mobile app (sort of) still works as you can view and peek at your anime watch list Shows will air this season and coming out this summer. However, the app’s “clubs” (ie discussion forums for specific shows) are currently unavailable and you cannot update your viewing history for shows you are currently watching. Trust me I’ve tried updating my progress to Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans last night with no success for a while.
All in all, the internet assumes that the hacker had some basis
JUST Users on Twitter and Reddit seem to have taken the hacker’s approach, albeit direct, of recommending their favorite anime with ease, treating the inconvenience as a detour W because it (forcedly) helped promote it Serial experiments laid in most Serial experiments laid How possible: Promising people connected to the internet a positive outcome by hacking.

I’m not saying that the hackers’ cybercrime is justified, but the results of their actions have changed Serial experiments laid I put myself on the totem pole of the classic shows and will then take care of them when I’m done evaluating the shows that are gathering dust on my watch list.
