In a new interview with Eurogamer, Diablo IV Assistant Game Director Joe Piepiora spoke about how all of the beta testing Blizzard has been conducting over the past few months has been key to avoiding disaster at launch.

“Each of these betas has changed our understanding of our own technical capabilities and what we need to do to make launch smoother in general,” Piepiora said. “So it was great.”

Blizzard told Eurogamer that the company had already conducted numerous internal tests prior to the public beta test. But while these tests can help find some bugs and issues, Piepiora explained that it really is: Extensive beta testing with real players are much more useful.

“When people come from different ISPs and come in from different servers around the world, you get so much more data,” Piepiora said. “And with each of those, we’ve noticed a lot of little things that happen, like what happens with clan invites, what happens when you join a party in a certain way – a lot of little things of that nature across the board.”

Piepiora also wanted to clarify that these tests didn’t appear to be “marketing betas,” or tests that were just demos to get people to buy the game and weren’t meant to actually do anything to repair. “None of them were [marketing betas.] It’s all about, we need data to make sure the launch goes smoothly. That is solely the purpose of the betas that we have made.”

In addition, Piepiora claimed that Blizzard and the developers are working on the upcoming version Diablo IV I’ve “learned a lot” from each beta, pointing out that even the last –which all went pretty smoothly– still helped the team find things “happening in the backend” that, if not discovered and fixed, “would have caused some launch issues”.
