The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has many changes compared to Breath of the Wild, and for some players the biggest seems to be difficulty.
When I first played Breath of the Wild in 2017, I was surprised by how difficult the game was early on. The weapon degradation system means I have to keep an eye on what I’m fighting against, enemies can deal a decent amount of damage, and obviously Guardians are a nightmare. So it surprised me when Tears of Kingdoms felt harder than the first game, and a lot of other players seemed to feel that way.
Players on the Zelda subreddit were discussing their feelings about the game’s difficulty, with the user who started the discussion saying, “Who else loves the fact that this game is so much harder [Breath of the Wild]? “While I neither like nor hate the difficulty of the game, many players definitely found it more challenging than the first game.
“I died more times in 10 hours of gameplay [Tears of the Kingdom] than what I did in 400 hours [Breath of the Wild],’ wrote one user. “Even if you excluded forget to switch back to [the] Glider after dive, it’s still a lot… I found this game overwhelming in a way I never got from it [Breath of the Wild]. Many players expressed some frustration with how many times enemies ended up single-handedly shooting them, an issue they didn’t have in the first game – and I found that to be a problem too.
One user shared that they weren’t sure which they thought was harder, believing that “combat was slightly harder” in Tears of the Kingdom, but “platforming was easier” thanks to Link’s new abilities. Another simply said they were “killed by a lizard with a mushroom on its boomerang,” which was annoying but also funny, so who’s to say if that’s a bad thing or not.
From a story standpoint, it does make sense that everything gets stronger – everyone also gets weaker as a side effect of the melancholic issues. Although it doesn’t always result in a smooth gaming experience.
Difficult gameplay isn’t the only thing players have to get used to. Many players also completely forget about the Ascension ability, leading them into some tricky situations.
