A rocket, a doll
Attach the Zonai Rocket to your shield and hold ZL to fly into the air, perfect for climbing steep slopes when the climb isn’t there to help. Yes, the burst of energy is relatively short-lived, but it’s a wild ride nonetheless.
You might want to temper your expectations of the shield surfing awesomeness of this Fuse combo. It doesn’t provide that much more speed, and the short lifespan makes this a little disappointing.
Bomb bounce
If you want to get some airtime in style, why not light a bomb in your shield? This could be a Bomb Flower, a Zonai Time Bomb, basically anything that goes boom. Simply pull off a shield surf maneuver and watch Link fly skyward, unharmed.
Spring jumping
Like the tip above, you can attach the Zonai spring to your shield and take a surfing pose and fly into the air. They might not send you Enough tall as a bomb but makes a neat little sound.
Stroller cruise
What if Link had a skateboard? That’s the question everyone wants an answer to, right? Well, now you can find out! If you attach the Zonai Cart to Link’s Shield and then hit the slopes with the Surf Shield, you’ll be able to chop him for longer and over much harder terrain than is normally possible. Completely tubular!
Mine Cart Madness
You can also use a standard mine cart for another skateboard-like effect. The problem is that mine carts aren’t generally available across Hyrule like the Zonai carts are, so Fuse isn’t always the easiest to connect on the go.
Also, the higher center of gravity doesn’t look as cool as using a Zonai stroller, and style points are the most important thing to consider when going down hills.
Ice, ice, surfing
For even longer shield surfing, try making yourself an ice block (achieved by throwing an ice fruit into the water) and then slamming it against your shield. The slippery nature of the substance allows Link to glide around like nobody’s business when he uses the surf move, and you can even squirm back and forth to keep him there for longer.
Of course, this isn’t the most durable option (ice has a nasty habit of melting), but it’s certainly fun while it lasts.
Destroying the sled
Especially good in snowy conditions, pairing the sled with Link’s shield is a neat way to make Hylian downhills a little more fun. Why not turn a standard shield surf into a shield snowboard?
Fantastic
Try shield surfing with a Zonai fan attached to your shield and you won’t get the hoverboard effect you were hoping for (yeah, you’ll just fall).
Does movement help you when using a paraglider? Eh, no either, we’re afraid.
Ballooning Wonderful
If you still want to relive the days of Breath of the Wild before all this fancy Zonai kit came out, you can always stick an Octo balloon on your shield and press ZL to watch Link slowly rise into the air. Ah, simpler times…
Plow the attack
Parrying with a gem attached to your shield won’t do anything unusual when parrying, but if you wait for the enemy to swing at you then the effect will be loud and clear.
Each gem has its own effect that will add to defense (Ruby produces fire, Topaz causes electrical shock, etc.), so it’s worth playing around with to suit the situation.
Create a space with springs
To put some distance between you and an oncoming enemy, connect the Spring Zonai device to your shield and watch them bounce back upon impact. Besides being reusable, this one has the added effect of being hilarious boeing sound as the enemy flies backwards — you’re welcome.
A mirror, a mirror on a… shield?
Zelda fans are no strangers to the Mirror Shield, but you can take it to a more literal level in Tears of the Kingdom by combining your shield with (you guessed it) the Mirror.
In addition to distracting enemies by giving them a chance to fix their hair (ok, that doesn’t actually happen), this combo reflects sunlight from above into your enemy’s eyes, temporarily blinding them and opening them up for attack.
