Digital Foundry investigated the functionality of emulators in developer mode on an Xbox Series S.

Digital Foundry has taken another close look at the functionality of emulators on an Xbox Series S in developer mode in a new video.

Until a few weeks ago, fans of classics were happy about the possibility of being able to play games from older console generations relatively easily on Xbox Series X|S via emulator. Because Dolphin, XBSX2 or Duckstation and other emulators could be started in retail mode, although strictly speaking it violated the rules. This year Microsoft’s silent toleration ended, all emulators were blocked in retail mode. Since then, the console has to be put into developer mode before it can be used.

Digital Foundry took a close look at the process from setting up developer mode to launching a selection of games in different emulators. The setup was time-consuming and not very intuitive, and a one-time fee of $20 is required. The emulators again mostly showed a satisfactory gaming experience, even if some crashes and errors occurred.
