The developers of the upcoming PlayStation 5 sequel Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 say the game will attempt to strike a balance between humor and heart while respectfully portraying the darker tones of Peter Parker when he wears his Venom symbiote suit.
While Sony’s hour-long PlayStation Showcase Last week we saw by 12 minutes of new gameplay footage by Peter Parker and Miles Morales in Marvels Spider-Man 2 to end the show. The upcoming PlayStation 5-exclusive action game seemed to be going for a similar mix of web-slinging, kinetic fight scenes and tasty humor as its predecessor, albeit with the added bonus that Parker was quite aggressive while wearing his new Venom symbiote suit.

Peter’s inner struggle with Venom will be like battling an addiction
While one side of the internet spawned memes comparing nervousness to the Spider-Man 2 from Parker to Tobey Maguire’Bully Macguire” performance in 2007 Spider-Man 3 Movie (That was a camp masterpiece), another group of fans were in awe of Peter Parker voice actor Yuri Lowenthal’s Sasuke Uchiha-esque performance as the newly exhausted web head under the Venom SymbioteThe Extraterrestrial Influence.
In conversation with Eurogamer, Spider-Man 2 Creative director Bryan Intihar revealed that Parker’s inner struggle with the black, parasitic space goo that makes him so aggressive in the game will resemble that of a human battling addiction. Unlike director Sam Raimi’s more campy portrayal Spider-Man 3 Venom, Intihar said that Peter’s bond with the symbiote suit “isn’t something we want to make fun of”.
“The topic of addiction is widespread, especially because of the symbiote. We did a lot of research, not only on previous stories with the symbiote, but also just on the timing [Peter] is connected, how can that feel? We don’t want to go into too much detail about how it plays out in the narrative, but we want to take it very seriously,” Intihar said. “So it’s really about really looking at the issues of addiction, how it can affect someone’s personality and the people around them, and you’ll see that it’s not just having an impact on Peter himself, but on those as well who are close to him. You’ll see that as the game progresses.”

Miles Morales will give Spider-Man 2 player a symbiote fear pause
While in the PlayStation Showcase footage it’s definitely harrowing to see Lowenthal’s Parker stray from joking about being New York’s “”Spider Cop‘ and gently prodded the stoic Silver Sable gives him a high five throwing rescued civilians on the ground and Whatever this has to do with Kraven’s henchmensaid Intihar and Game Director Ryan Smith Eurogamer The Spider-Man 2 It won’t just be about Peter being an asshole, as the role of Miles Morales will balance out the game’s darker moments with some ease.
“I think you saw that in the gameplay reveal,” Smith said. “We have the moments with Ganke and Miles and the falcon he’s left behind – the Talon drone – and then at the very end you have this line where Peter changes and Miles says, ‘You know, that’s how it is he never’, right ? So we have these human elements, both on the serious side where we see the symbiote affecting Peter, but also on the lighter side.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with serious scenes, with humor tending to abruptly deprive them of their meaning. Time will tell whether or not Spider-Man 2 will manage to balance heart and humor with its dark moments, but Intihar is confident the game has struck the right balance of wit and drama.
“We talked a lot about whether it was like that Marvel’s Spider-Man or Miles Morales“Our games are about still having heart and humor,” Intihar said. “It’s really about finding the balance between those darker themes and characters, but also delivering that very human story with a lot of heart and humor… I think that was difficult.” But I think we have one at the end of the day found a good balance.”
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be on the market later in the fall.
